When I first got into oil changing, with Hondas, they were using a largish diameter spin-on filter for most of their line, so I picked up the filter socket for that. For an inordinately high price, something around $40. :( Then, in my motorcycle phase I picked up a Honda oil filter socket sized for their motorcycle line. Honda then started using the small motorcycle-sized filter on their cars, so I was good to go with the motorcycle socket. And with this Prius, our first Toyota, that Honda motorcycle socket still works.

There's cross-compatibility through the Toyota line with other items too: I'm using Corolla steel rims with our snow tires.

I had one filter left for the HHR after I got the Sonic. Buying a two pack off Amazon was a little cheaper, and that was good for the year. I returned it at Advance Auto Parts, and picked up a Sonic one from there. Obviously, this won't work if the filter brand you have isn't carried by the local store.
