Dealer is increasing quote on catalytic converter replacement. They say that the cooling part of the hybrid battery is in that area and they need to drain it to replace the catalytic converter so they tacked an additional $300.00 to quote. Sounds very fishy to me. Why would they put the cooling system next to something hot?

oil filter is kinda close to the right front wheel; ask them if they have to drain the oil before they can change tires.... /

the catalytic converter has a connection to the radiator fluid, but this connection cab be blocked off before replacing the catalytic converter, so there is NO need to drain the cooling system /

They're maybe slavishly following the Repair Manual instruction, and it would be the engine coolant I think:

But it seems odd, that they wouldn't just clamp off coolant lines. Or pull them off and quickly push on a stopper, which is easier on the hose, and more effective I think.

$300 to drain an refill a radiator? That’s a big-time ripoff. All you need to do is remove the plastic pan beneath the engine, open a stop cock, then close it and add coolant.

    Welcome to PriusChat!!
Though one could argue otherwise, the HV battery and the catalytic converter aren't exactly near one another.

It does sound like a 'stealership' move, the only "cooling part of the hybrid battery" is forced AIR, which isn't exactly drainable.

They must've meant "vacuum", like to vacuum the cash from your pockets :cautious:

Could be that the service advisor (ahem, extortionist) was mistaken when describing the job requirements.

As Mendel Leisk posted, the engine coolant runs to the catalytic converter for faster engine warm-up to improve fuel efficiency. To replace the catalytic converter, the engine coolant either has to be drained and refilled, or the two hoses that run to the catalytic converter have to be stopped while the converter is changed. Radiator drain/refill is typically half what they quoted you, however.
