As the title states: "Caution: Load Carry Capacity Reduced"

What does that mean? While looking at my car (driver side door where the VIN is located), I found a sticker that does not look like OEM or someone placed that sticker there.

Was my car modified AFTER it came out of the factory? Something added that was 8 pounds?

I purchased my car preowned. It was originally from the state of Maine.

If it matters, the car is a 2012 Prius Plug In.

****Edit: never mind, I have found the answer. I guess, this post has become a FYI post.

Seems as everyone might be different as far as weight.

"This notice is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Gulf States Toyota, Inc. has decided that your vehicle (VIN listed above) fails to conform to a provision of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) No. 110 as it relates to Load Carrying Capacity Modification (Addendum) Labels."

It seems to me that this might have something to do with dealer added equipment i.e. Sun roof. CYA might be the case. Eight pounds might be a little more critical for aircraft take-off weight maximum, but a Prius... Com'on!

The sticker is applied when "port installed options" are installed. The options increase the weight, making the OEM sticker wrong. They have to correct that to be legal. The law is an a$$, but the law IS the law!

My similar stupid sticker says 14 pounds. The only known possibly port-installed add-ons are window tint, a Toyota branded add-on Bluetooth system, and plastic rear bumper protector. It's hard to imagine those adding up to that much. Maybe floor mats?

I have same sticker on my 2012 trim level 3 hatchback that we bought new and would also like to know whether it was something added by dealer or legal requirements, or exactly what.

Maybe it has to do with the load rating of the tires in which the car has been equipped.

Yes. My 2015 has that sticker, I assume this is because it has the optional brushed aluminum trim at the bottom of the doors.

Also the Toyota branded mats !!! in the back for example that is about right if you have the four plus in the cargo plus cargo mesh ... those are add-ons (which I refused to pay but dealer did not bother to take out)....
