I'm using Corolla steel rims with snow tires, and without a centre cap of some sort, it is pretty scary. Squeamish folk, avert your eyes:

Not much I can do about the nuts, without springing for some chrome acorns, but for the center, I tried: 2" ABS end cap. The inside diameter is 2 3/8", almost a perfect fit over the raised centre lip of the rim.

What I settled on was to cut "rubber bands" out of an old bicycle inner tube, stretch them over that lip, finesse them so they're right at the edge, with no kinks. Then I "screwed" the cap onto it, 'till it stopped, and finally pushed it down the rest of the way.

On the back wheels they go on with decent clearance; on the front the axle end interferes slightly, pushing the cap out maybe 1/16". We've gone for a drive, and so far they've stayed on. Will update if-and-when they do fling off, hopefully not.

I know wheel covers would be better, but I'm averse to them, they seem like clip-on ties. Anyway, looking marginally better I think:
