    Leaving on a trip tomorrow. Changing transmission fluid today.

    See the old fluid, the new fluid going in, and the old drain plug gunk.

    Why would he need to do that?

    2nd gen drain bolt is magnetic? It ticks me off that 3rd gen isn't.

    First change?

    To clean out the trani......you never get all of the fluid out......especially if he plans on keeping it for another 100,000.
    It's cheap and easy.........lowest cost and easiest thing you can do to a prius....

    I don't understand why an alternate fluid would flush things out any better. The drain is something like 90%.

    And Toyota's pretty adamant to use only the Toyota ATF WS fluid. I know about your science experiment lol, but I would stick with the OEM fluid, for a transaxle in good working order.

    I was a little surprised that the plug is magnetic.

    Valvoline is WS..... plus my Honda says to use only honda oil or may cause damage...never have run honda oil...just mobile 1
    Look at his drain plug....the rest of the trani looks like that....
    Toyota WS is nothing special...... I had this discussion at OIL Com (massive trade show) in Houston. I don't believe much that any automotive manufacturer says about use their fluids only. And I didn't mean he had to use a different fluid..... but I understand your comment.

    Toyota only takes this adamant stance with the transaxle fluid. Their the coolant spec is a close runner up, but they do acknowledge other coolants will work, if (and there's a long list of provisos).

    Motor oil, they just name a spec. And I'm not sure how this came up, but I've had Hondas for decades, and I've never seen an adamant stipulation from Honda that you must use their brand of oil. FWIW, I'm using Toyota bulk oil in a couple of Hondas, lol.

    Getting back to Toyota and their ATF WS fluid: when they tell me, and it's just this one fluid (which they seem to think is lifetime too, so I don't see them getting rich over this), when they tell me using anything else could damage the transaxle, I'm just bright enough to go along with it, lol.

    So..every time you do an oil change, you do it again 500 miles later?

    Once it gets to this, I surrender...

    next it'll be...I've got more time sitting on the crapper at test depth than you have at...(something something and something else).....

    @ETC(SS) should like that one....
