Does anyone have any idea why the charge port door does not release. I have my key on me the light lights up in the charge port area. But I cannot open the door stays locked. The port door is ajar a little still attached to the lock. When I close it it doesn't close. I know this instruction the how to open up the port door in an emergency. But I was wondering if anybody else have any idea why it refuses to open. I even had my spare key and it didn't open.

Interesting! My charge door has “stuck” a few times, but I’ve just closed it and it would open on the next try. A couple of times I’ve had to try to close it twice to get it to actually close.

Sounds like what happened during our first week of ownership. Mrs Bear did not put the plastic protector cap back on the J1772 connector and left it in the holder to the right of the connector. She then pushed the door closed -- which of course did not work because the cap was in the way. Not knowing how much force was required, she pushed just hard enough to get the charge port door latch to engage, but not to close. Of course, at that point one could neither push the door closed nor get it to open.

We used the "emergency" technique described in the owners' manual:

It was very easy to do and fixed the problem without any issues or surprises. Needless to say, neither one of us has made the mistake again!

Thanks, I was going to try that before I take it in. I think Toyota could put a an Emergency cable or a button like they do for the gas door to open it from inside the car. That will help out a lot.

The emergency procedure should work, but note that the Toyota manual warns:

"This unlocking method is a temporary correction procedure for emergency use only. It the problem persists, have the vehicle inspected by your Toyota dealer immediately."

Using the jack handle as an emergency tool to open the charging port door is not as convenient as a pull cord, but hopefully you'll only have to do it rarely if at all.

@Old Bear beat me to it - I’ve twice had the door stick closed when the cap was left in the holder (once my fault and once when a stranger who moved the cable from my car to his closed the door). But didn’t realize there was an emergency release procedure! I forced it back open both times without any lasting damage. Yeah, I know: RTFM.

BTW, someone else here in a similar thread recommended leaving the cap dangling when you’re out so it’s obvious it needs to be returned to the charging port before closing the door.

My port door is stuck too. Not sure where to place the wrench. What does the emergency release look like and where is it exactly?

Never mind. I finally figured it out. I'll not be using that cap holder from now on. Doing the dangle thing instead as suggested in this thread. Thanks!

I use the emergency procedure to open up the lot lid. I took it to Toyota today and two technicians couldn't find any problems. So they lubricated the door hinges and around the latch. My problem when I pressed to open up the lid , on a cold day it only opened up an inch and still locked.

I found a solution. Before I close the cover door or lid I press the spring in and then close the door. When you do that you hear a lock sound. Now that the door is closed I can either press the door open or just open it without pressing the door inward.

Not sure if this works every time, but haven’t had any sticking problems since doing this.

I push the door at the VERY rear edge. I THINK when it stuck in the past I was pushing 2-3 inches from the rear edge.
