Charging while driving with gas engine

    kicking and screaming.:eek: funny thing, my older brother (68) is way ahead of the curve. always was a gadget guy, latest and greatest, and has stood in many i phone lines.

    I was just as bad:cool:.

    Didn’t get an iPhone until 2 father’s days ago. Before then I had a flip phone for 11 years:eek:.

    So if I work through the math...
    You used 35/39.4=0.888gal instead of 35/60=0.583gal or an extra .305gal to charge to 80%
    At $3.00/gal, that's ~$0.92 for your 23 miles or about 4 cents/mile.
    HV mode was costing you $3.00/60mpg = 5 cents/mile
    EV mode would cost 4 cents/mile if you paid around 20 cents/KWh

    The interesting part thing here is if you would have then switched from charge model to EV mode until your battery drained, you would have in theory gone 58 miles (35+23) on the same 0.888 gal of gas which works out to 65mpg...
    Do we really expect charge mode + ev mode for a long highway drive to exceed HV mode over the same distance?
    OR, is the 65mpg vs. 60mpg just rounding errors and it's about the same (my expectation).

    i think we expect charge mode + ev mode to be less efficient than hv mode, due to conversion losses.

    as far as cost goes, that all depends on what each user pays for gas. electric cost doesn't matter since ev comes from gas in this equation.
