For some time now, Walmart has been selling their Super Tech house brand of Full Synthetic 0W20 motor oil and oil filter (10358). A 5 quart jug retails at $15.98 ($3.20 per quart!) and the oil filter - which looks exactly like Frame's Extra Guard CH10358 and may well be made by them - goes for $2.97.

Two Question: Any guesses out there as to who REALLY manufactures this "full synthetic" oil - and - would you consider using it (together with its half-price filter) if it made 5000 mile oil change intervals more "practical"?

The underlying reasoning here is that frequent oil changes (more frequent than, say: 10,000 miles) may help to reduce the gunk recirculating thru the EGR valve and Intake manifolds....

    Folks, what say ye?

It’s not formulated with detergents and anti wear additives for protection. But It does meets standard lubrication, heat and viscosity benchmarks.

At least for one version, the Safety Data Sheet (PDF) names Warren Distribution, Inc., as the supplier.
I’m not sure about the filter, but the engine oil packaging shows the American Petroleum Institute certification marks, and the product is listed in the EOLCS database as meeting Toyota’s ILSAC GF-5 requirement.

True of WalMart synthetic in much, but not all of the US. Walmart uses other suppliers in some areas. It is good oil. (Grit is confused.) That company is also known as Warren Performance Products or WPP.

I get Toyota 0W20 bulk through my dealership pretty cheap. For a long time it was $4.50 CDN per litre, then recently a bit more: $4.90.

Still, a few bucks more or less is trivial.

Why 0W40 instead of the recommended 0W20?

super tech oil is really cheap oil. Several years back I seem to remember reading an article about it that it may be
recycled oil. But I can't confirm this.
But, the price difference between know real oil, is worth the $2-3 extra cost.
$25-27 for Castrol or Mobil 1 syn. oil. Genuine Toyota filter can be had on ebay for about $3.75 when you buy
    5 or 6 at a time. That's what I did.
The oil and filter are the most important item for your engine. WHY risk a $5000 plus engine repair/replacement
    to save a few dollars????

OW-20 is too thin. It’s recommended only to satisfy US regulators to meet CAFE standards. Thicker oil is recommended in other areas around the world within the Prius manual.
