This is the closest we'll hopefully never see to a nuclear attack. Warhead re-entry only the explosion would be substantially larger.

Indeed. A nuclear attack would be VERY bad!

    Another video:
    .

The news earlier was unclear about whether this meteorite is related to asteroid 2012 DA14 coming pretty close to us soon.

A couple of other useful links

BREAKING: Huge Meteor Explodes Over Russia.
zyalt: Взрыв метеорита в небе над Уралом... Вся информация в одном посте.

Enjoy the videos, all you youtube-enabled

    a) atmospheric shockwave induced
    b) everybody goes to their windows to look at the incandescent trails
    c) shockwave arrives at ground level
    d) glass shards arrive in face

So, if you see b), presume that c) will follow soon and make an effort to avoid d). Just sayin'

A lot of meteoritic material is going to be recovered from this I reckon.

^ That meteoritic material is quite valuable to some.

BTW: The top link in my post is to CNN. If you have access to CNN they have a vid not linked to Youtube.

I just watches 2012DA14 pass on NASA'a site, very cool!
The footage in Russia is really impressive!
A little steeper angle, it might have turned out with Tunguska like results!

Turn the clock back to the mid 1980s and something worse might have happened.

What I'm really interested in is the ability to detect such meteors in the future. Sure we can see the bigger rocks as long as they are not 'sun approaching.' The question is what are the limits of resolution for detecting 'in coming?'

One of the CNN reporters noted the size of the meteor was about the size of a Prius v! Moving considerably faster!
It's nice to have known reference points!
It came in from sun side, it's why no one noticed it until it was too late!

This 'Prius' size category is nearly undetectable (at distance) but also much more abundant than the 50-meter 'city killers' or the 500-meter 'good bye and thanks for all the fish' size categories.

So, for the littles, we can seemingly do no more than suggest average rates (like 1 per decade) and suppose that only 5% of them will partially blow down cities.

Please remember that averages like that are +/- everything, and offer no assurance that the next one will not be latter today

Fake meteorite material has already been offered for sale in Russia; an illustration of entrepeneurial* spirit.

    * I use the Evan Fusco spelling of entrepeneurial

    <AHEM>

My understanding, all of the earth is accretion of 'meteor' material swept up during the planet formation of our solar system. Unless of course the earth and universe are actually just 7,000 years old.
