Simple answer: whoever's in charge of naming concept cars is Nuts.
More likely, "Lightning Bolt," as F8L suggests.

I believe it also meant "arrow" at one time.

I agree with that. Volt is not so bad but Spark was bad and Bolt is worse. Crossvolt isn't that much better. Makes me think of Ghostbusters. Don't cross the streams.

    Quoted from that link:
"Musk still not a fan of hydrogen fuel cells. Words like “terrible” for efficiency, and “extremely silly“, “extremely dumb”, “extremely flammable” were uttered. Summed it all up by saying “…it will be super obvious as time goes by” that hydrogen fuel cells aren’t the future."

Totally agree. If I was a shareholder in Toyota I would be deeply disturbed on their effort and investment in this tech.

I'm sure they have a lot of research behind such decisions.

Any other car companies working on hydrogen? If not, that could be a big problem considering you need an all new infrastructure.

Probably most or all of them have something in time and money invested in H vehicles, but Toyota seems to be way over the top in their optimism about it as THE future. I'm still unsure, despite their own promise, that there will even be a 2017 PiP in the lineup. They seem so down with anything electric. Their bad, I think.

Honda has, or will soon, unveil the next generation Clarity, and the Japanese government is supporting FCVs.

If we are expecting that hydrogen will be almost like a substitute for gasoline, forget it. We will have to adjust to a very different energy source from gasoline. Whether we use as a combustion fuel, or to produce electricity from a fuel cell, it's a major paradigm shift from the old Otto-cycle that has been our main mode of transportation for over a century. Hydrogen can be stored in a tank at 10k psi, or it can be kept unpressurized as it was in liquid-fueled rockets. Neither of these options are anything like a tank of gasoline that can sit for months and then be used instantly by starting the car.

The Prius is a brilliant example of creating a seamless transition from one energy source to another. A complete novice can get in and drive it as though it were a regular car. Full-electric cars aren't that much different, although many have learned the hard way that storing electricity isn't much like storing gasoline. It can disappear when it's not supposed to.

Whether we choose to use hydrogen-slush by putting it in a tank and burning it before it can evaporate away, or pressurize it in a 10,000 psi vessel, or store it in a chemical matrix, it will not be the same-old same-old for anyone.

Says a lot for the marketing site. Bolt seems a great name; sounds similar to Volt, but carries on the electric theme as in lightening bolt. The UK Ampera has Electron and Positiv as model options. All seems a bit of fun to me.

If that marketing company doesn't get it, then they're in the wrong job. Comparing the Bolt to Toyota calling the next Prius a Brius shows to me the journo is intellectually challenged.

Bolt is an inexpensive fastener purchased in a hardware store. Their tag line can be, Don't be a dolt, buy a Bolt". It's better than the "We put the VOLT in ReVOLTing."

A Brius would be a Prius manufactured in England.

Maybe Chevy found Mr. Smoke-too-much from Monty Python's "Travel Agent" sketch.

But the Chevrolet Spark is ok?

You should feel sorry for the GM UK arm, Vauxhall. The GM HQ is in Belgium or France and decided to name a model of car Adam, Europe wide!?! Whilst that might be cute in French speaking countries, who in the English speaking World wants to say "I'm just picking up my Adam later", or "I was inside my Adam the other day when I was rear ended". Tragic. Not as bad as the Nissan Cedric, but still bad.

So a Chevy Bolt is nothing.
