It is a federal tax rebate. You may not get it if you get hammered by other IRS shenanigans but otherwise you should get the full $7500.

The Volt does not have a planetary gearset. The Volt has no clutch. Sorry. Thanks again for playing another round of FUD.

This $41k car is 3 seconds slower than Prius for passing at highway speed. How can it be a success? GM really screwed it up. The credit should go to the tax payers for subsidizing it.

Are you playing dumb? The information is less than a month old and it came from Rob Peterson (Volt spokesman). This is what he said:

premium gas to boot?? why? is the engine some sort of mini high performance lawn mower type?? 40CC with 18 to 1 compression?

i cant believe anyone still believes that premium gas has more energy in it. i cant possibly think that GM is trying to convince anyone otherwise

    $33,500 ??

Um NO - GM is STICKIN' it to their own customers. I saw on another chat board, a post from a Volt buyer stating (because they're only receiving 10 Volts) his GM dealer (Colima, CA) is charging a TEN THOUSAND DOLLAR PREMIUM ! !
    :pound:

So, if you DON'T qualify for any Fed money - how does FIFTY ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS strike you.

    Huh. Well that is disappointing.

I'd loved to see a true series-hybrid powered by a small turbine with a small battery pack...

I wonder if that Capstone turbine prototype will go anywhere...

    premium allows higher compression ratios.

higher compression ratios usually give greater thermal efficiency.

so there isn't more energy in higher RON fuels, but less of that energy is being wasted as heat.

Did you read what you linked to?

"While that story may be shocking, it remains untrue. Sam Abuelsamid from Autobloggreen determined Voight is simply a technician whose job (?former) is to simply shuttle cars for journalists and who has no actual knowledge about Volt engineering. Know the type?"

I would give you credit as you tear into GM for GM's lack of consistent information. They have official spokespersons making incorrect statements on a few fronts now.

I am not for a turbine. I am for an efficient gas engine operating in a very narrow band best for extracting the most energy out of the gas. I do not care if it revs high and makes 'engine noises' at the wrong time. I want it tuned for efficiency not for having a predictable engine noise where a normal car would. Unfortunately the Volt is not tuned that way as GM feels it would 'upset' a normal driver.

I do not care if my serial hybrid suddenly turns on the gas engine at a stop light when it decides that is the best time for power. Make the engine reasonably quiet of course that is all I ask.

It looks for now that we are not going to see a 'tuned' serial hybrid from GM which is a disappointment. It is still a true serial hybrid but here goes..........

Its been 'dumbed down' for comfort reasons in more ways then I like. Those trade offs will show in the final CS mpg.

US$41,000 for a new Chevrolet Volt? They've got to be kidding.

At that price I might as well get a well-equipped 2010 Toyota Prius and pocket nearly US$14,000 in change even AFTER taxes and title for the car.

granted GM is a day late and a dollar short with the Volt (bad use of the idiom) but better the Volt than a Hummer replacement ...

Hmm, comparing a Leaf to a Volt ... 100 mile range and You gotta plug-in or no go. 40 miles on Volt and you can go 300 on gas, then fill up, go more.

Wwwhaatt? The Volt will require premium gas, at least .20 more/gal than regular? Not cool.

EV battery warranties and replacement costs are not being discussed much that I know of, but believe, the average consumer will be more than interested to know what they are.

IOW, if the Leaf battery warranty is, like 6 years, and it costs $6k to replace, or the Volt's is 6 yrs. $8k to replace ... good luck selling those cars in volume.

The articles are sound, consistent and clear to me. Rob Peterson was denying Andrew English's claim of the Volt's gas engine driving the wheels but confirming the use of planetary gear-set and clutches.

How the Volt would use PSD and clutches and ICE not drive the wheel would be revealed later. One report said they are being careful not to violate Toyota's patent.

Isn't that like saying, "better Mother Theresa, than Charlie Manson" ??

You can almost always find another bad example to justify a position ... that's all I'm saying.

I totally agree. The point of series hybrid is to disconnect the gas engine from the wheels. GM wants to make it sound otherwise. Auditory over function.... bad decision.
