Not understanding differences between mainstream & early-adopter was a common problem for Volt enthusiasts too.

So John, please end our confusion and give us a clear definition of mainstream.

Well, a few years ago he defined mainstream sales as 5,000/month.
I don’t recall any other more recent definitions except ones that only used terms without definitions;)

Actually, it is worse than that.
From this rare quote where John actually defined the minimum level for mainstream sales, it appears he is referring to the technology, not the model.

So by this definition, Tesla hit mainstream sales in 2018.
Toyota hybrids still are at mainstream sales using the definition of multiple models as the hybrid drive is used in a wide variety of Toyota vehicles.
The Volt obviously isn’t there, although the Bolt shows promise IF GM wants it there. Currently I believe they are only producing about 30,000 per year. Not sure how many more they are selling worldwide.

The Leaf/Zoe is there worldwide, but not in the US.

is a GM enthusiest ... someone that loves GM's bigger vehicles? ..... as opposed to someone that's enthused with long range PHEV's?
wait .... you said you can't compare a legacy company to a startup. Are we now going to move that goal post back to where it previously was?
if GM's audience is the land barge, then why doesn't that mean that they DO in fact "know their audience". In other words - manufacturers figure out who their audience is by building stuff, & if people buy it, or not - then they build more, or they stop. And if a market shifts to Big Stuff, a manufacturer that "knows their audience" would necessarily stop making small stuff. Isn't that why Toyota killed off 2 of the 4 Prius lines here in the United States? That would be sensible, for manufacturers that "know Their audience". Speaking of killing off cars here in the US, isn't the Chevy Volt still manufactured for China - where smaller vehicles are still acceptable?
I was an Enthusiast (decades ago) of big vehicles at one time, because cargo area was more important than efficiency - tho having both would have been great. Then shifting to more efficiency became the enthusiasm - though more cargo space would be great. The Prius was the most efficient - so we then abandoned voluminous cargo area for efficiency. Then manufacturers started making bigger vehicles efficient. Now we have a 2½ ton plugin minivan that we can not only have huge cargo area - we get greater efficiency than we got in our Prius.

It's got to be no easy task for a manufacturer to see which way the wind is blowing for the majority of buyers, then keep an eye on even as the wind changes directions.

    Zombie resurrection ~
Although they were way too pricey when they were new, we picked this 2yr old bad boy up for a song .... $15K.
Although its a bit crampt for 6'-5" ... sure liking the 50-65 ev miles & 3 seconds faster 0-60mph than the prime. Yea the gas burn rate is prius better - but for us - gas is less than 10% of the time. 7.2kW's charge speed is quick too.

    PCvolt-1.jpg

Will trade for a RavPrime - once they get that ridiculous $50K price down to a point where it doesn't need the $7,500 incentives - and low low production is no more of a problem.
