New to the forum, I’ve been “lurking” for a while since my daughter decided she wanted a used Prius for her first car - wealth of information here!

She LOVES her “new to her” car, but I noticed about a week ago that her steering wheel defrost buttons aren’t working - research on here suggests the clock spring.

All other steering wheel buttons work (temperature, volume, etc), and yes, if I turn the wheel 90 degrees to the left - the defrost buttons work.

My question is - due to the clock spring having something to do with the airbag (???), is this a safety issue? I can live without her being able to control the defrost from the steering wheel - but as a mom, can’t live with it if it could cause an airbag to malfunction!

    (2006 base Prius)

Airbag is still working fine. If there was any problem with airbag airbag warning light would light up. Yes both functions go through clock spring but separately. Maybe in the future clock spring will fail more and airbag warning light will light up and then airbag might not work. So if you want to be sure you could change it before that but you should use OEM one as aftermarket ones can fail a lot faster.

My Prius experience has been that the right side buttons will stop working first. These are that round pad that includes the defrost buttons. this could go on for a while before the next thing fails which will be the cruise control functions.

When the defrost fails it's kinda okay because those are redundant buttons meaning that you can still turn on the defrost, etc through the main screen. When the cruise control fails there is no other way to make the cruise work. It is at this point that I have replaced the clock spring.

Here is a lead to a good video I found for clock spring replacement...

The only thing special needed (and it is not that special) is a torx bit. Disconnect the battery! Also, be sure to park the car with the wheels very straight because you will have to put the steering wheel back on very straight when you are done.

Or make match marks on the wheel and column shaft before pulling the wheel, and put it back on with the marks aligned.

Any suggestion on where to buy 2007 Prius clock spring .
    Toyota OEM is $300
    Dormant is $90
    Amazon $39

Will Amazon part be good from a safety standpoint ? I don't wanna buy something that could compromise safety

Experience around here with cheap aftermarket spiral cables seems to be that they work ok for a little while.

I'd probably prefer a used Toyota part, but I'd care about the mileage on the donor car. These are a wear item, getting flexed with every turn of the steering wheel.

Why would you not recommend dorman?

Used part - who knows if airbag was already deployed and there is some damage to this part. Yeah they test the used part but it could fail if the clock spring was damaged if airbag was deployed

This is what I got from a used part seller on ebay.

Yes has been tested and works great the most common problem with these vehicles is when the items module becomes burnt and the air bag on the wheel explodes."

Is the above really true for gen 2 Prius?

Whether buying an inexpensive aftermarket part, or a used original part, you'll always be assuming some level of risk compared to that of a new original part. The different ways we different people guess at that comparative risk have some personal judgment involved; I've said what my judgment would be, but yours doesn't have to be the same.

Certainly, if I bought a used spiral cable of any kind, I'd be closely inspecting and bench testing it for any sign it might have been in an airbag deployment, which would lead me to pass on it. Could there be some kind of damage from bag deployment that would leave no trace? Well, maybe, but that's not what I've seen.

Maybe I am interpreting this wrong.
    84306-0E010 or 8430648030 are the newer part# for the old part# 843060E010

Are you just asking about the hyphen?

Toyota part numbers are usually spelled with a hyphen in the middle. Sometimes they aren't. It's the same part number.

Yeah. I was talking about hyphen.
84306-0E010(hyphenated) supercedes 843060E010(not hyphenated) per the link you sent. That would mean the newer part# is 84306-0E010(hyphenated).

Yeah, no. If you poke around the Toyota parts site enough, you'll see for every part that its 'supersession' list includes an entry for itself, spelled without the hyphen. Kind of an amusing pattern ... maybe it helps find the right entry when somebody searches for the number without the hyphen.
