Friend recently picked up a Prius and it has a weird clunking sound. It seems to happen while driving and when you push the accelerator or let off the accelerator. Feel likes something is engaging and disengaging. If you push the gas pedal, let off, push, let off, it does a clunk clunk every time it’s pushed on and off. Single clunk when pushed and single clunk when let off. Noise coming from the front of the car.

Any ideas what this could be?

I would get your suspension checked out. Maybe even the motor mounts. Has this car ever been in an accident or had an engine replacement?

Never been in an accident. He’s worried it’s transmission or axels. The suspension was recently replaced not long ago with brand new front shock/spring assembly and new rear shocks.

Where are you in SoCal? If you did the work on the shock/spring assembly yourself, you should just make sure everything is tight. Look at the axle and make sure it's not leaking any grease out, if it is, then maybe it needs to be replaced.

Located in OC. Had a shop do all the work. It’ll probably go back there this week. Will post results after they check it. Just trying to get an idea of what it could be prior to it going back so we can start checking there.

Well if you used quality Toyota parts or good aftermarket parts like KYB, then it shouldn't be bad. If the shop used monroe/gabriel garbage, it could be your problem
