This topic is stupid. Coasting is simply lifting your foot off the accelerator...of course you're getting 99.9MPG. You're also going to eventually come to a dead stop. I can get 99.9MPG on my Trooper 4X4 by coasting.

Soylent, your post is a good example of what Rangerdavid said earlier:

As a Prius owner, I find this topic highly relevant.

Soylent, I understand your question regarding this topic. The Prius runs differently then most cars. In my Jeep Grand Cherokee I could take my foot off of the accelerator but the engine will run the whole time. In my Prius I can take my foot off the accelerator and the engine stops completely not using any gas at all. While doing this the Prius uses regenerative braking to simulate the drag of an engine slowing down the car and at the same time uses that process to recharge the battery. That is power that would have been wasted in my Jeep.

Now that is half the story.

The next part is that someone figured out that if they could stop the regenerative brakes from running at all that the car would coast farther (much farther) and use no gas in the process. The fact that you can control this in the Prius has improved my MPG’s from about 42 MPG average to my current 55 MPG average. In extreme perfect condition cases some people have documented proof of getting consistently over 100 MPG. You can find that in the news

Frankly there is more a little more to it than that, but you can find out more on “Pulse and Glide,†and “Warp Stealth†on priuschat.com.

I honestly see where you were coming from. I would have thought the same thing if nobody had explained this stuff to me.

The genie crossed his arms and blinked!

    http://www.calcars.org/prius-evbutton-install.pdf

Promise you will read the whole thing first and read the Headlight Flasher EV on page 19

You only need one 5 foot 22 gauge wire and some solder.

*I* had to have dh do the wand-waving to turn off the back up beep. But he did it right fast the second or third time I threatened to kill him and/or the kid after we were listening to the noise for a while....Others here are MUCH smarter!
