I bought a 2007 Prius from a Toyota dealership in late August 2016. It is currently at just under 169k mileage.

I recently got a code p0a80. I was assured by the dealership the battery would last much longer than this.

The dealership is saying they can replace the pack for $4,800. This is totally out of my price range especially considering I still owe over $3,000 on the car.

Are there cheaper options in the Los Angeles area?

    Thank you

Talked to Toyota hq extensively. The only thing they will offer is money towards a refurbished battery.

What would your cost be OTD?

4800-1300 so around but 3500. I'm sure it would end up being closer to 4K.

that sounds wrong. if they are offering money toward a refurbished battery, you should be able to find soothing for $500.

you need to call around, and even look for a mech who will install a battery.

    i can't believe a dealership would sell a 10 year old car.o_O

Yeah I'm frankly a bit shocked at toyota's response. I wasn't necessarily expecting a free replacement but every agent I've spoken to has been very disappointing.

I bought it at Culver City Toyota in sept 2016.

I have a case number with Toyota but I'm already at wits end with their customer service

They offered a refurbished battery for $4800 and after I complained they offered $1300 to put towards that. So $3500 for a refurbished battery. (I'm rounding down for simplicity)

The whole idea of refurbished battery from Toyota is a but different.
But we are expecting a new OEM batt to be in the range $2500. Not sure Toyota Refurb.
Then maybe $1000 installation. But often you can do better.
Since you bought from a Toyota dealer, it was worth a shot.
Sounds like highball cost from dealer, but not sure scope of work.
This might be a case where you back off and try Dorman or other refurb.

Sorry if I'm being confusing. I'm typing this on a phone screen. And thanks for your interest.

I brought the car in for servicing at the dealership where I purchased it. A few hours later the tech told me the battery was shot and gave me the problem code. He told me to wait a few minutes while he looked into estimates. Returned a little later and said the best offer was $4800.

I called Toyota hq later that night, thanks to advice from this site. They gave me a claim number and made an offer via email yesterday. They would give me $1300 to put towards that dealership repair. They didn't specify exactly how they would give me this money but I assumed it would just be deducted from the repair bill.

I called in today to find out if this battery would be new or refurbished. The agent didn't know but contacted me later to say refurbished.

thanks. i still think your best bet is to shop around, get your bet price, and ask toyota to apply the credit. $4,800. is way high, especially for refurbished.

$1300 off is pretty good in this case, but the $4800 base price is the killer...if it was $3300 before credit ($2000 OTD) that would be good.. So you can delay until you get the price you want, or go away and get a Dorman or something. There are Prii battery installers members here (mostly from TX unfort) but they may be able to offer some insights on costs.

Unfortunately pretty much all of this is out of my price range. The whole rationale behind buying a Toyota certified Prius was avoiding expensive maintanance- at least for a couple years. I just regret getting the car. Live and learn. No more Toyota or hybrids.

Hello everyone. First post newbie here. I am also in Long Beach, California. My 2006 Prius just died on me. Looks like Traction Battery. All lights on, no power, big red triangle.

Dealer says it's out of warranty. I say they are wrong. My car was made in June 2006. So, must have been sold later. A one year warranty would expire in June 2007. So my reasoning is my ten years isn't up yet. It should be over in 3 months. My mileage is at 143,490.

    Is my math wrong?

    Thank you. :)

I'm thinking I still have a few months left. I'll try calling Toyota in the morning. If it isn't under warranty I can round up a good used one from a friend. I would rather have a new one though, if possible.:D
