Colorado Piloting Eliminating Gas Tax

with all the marijuana taxes pouring in, they should eliminate all others.

it's funny how they offer the best plug in tax incentives, but now want to tax them for driving.

 

Tax by mile should be federally illegal and banned on privately owned vehicles.

Waste millions of dollars tracking people just so people out of state and semis don't need to pay much of anything to drive there, smart.

 

And the opposite: the tons of tourist driving their cars or rentals who buy gas but wouldn't pay a tax under this system.

 

I'm currently "not" participating in a beta for a per mile tax program for CA. I signed up to participate but it's pretty annoying. I selected the phone gps tracking method. But I still have to "buy" miles on an account to continue driving. I also have to take a picture of my odometer periodically.

All this administration and tracking needs must cost a whole boat load of money. It's money that could go straight to a gas tax which will go straight to government to waste. Either way, it goes to waste but at least the gas tax is less annoying. But oh no, it's political suicide to raise gas tax. I mean is the general public really that stubborn? Would we really rather track our miles giving up privacy in some cases when a simple raise in gas tax will solve the issue and generate more money?

 

what a great state to fill up in, if you live nearby. gas savings will pay for your weed.

 

There are private companies quite willing to handle this for a small, nominal fee. Just like private prisons that make money by filling the cells and avoiding parole or anything that might depopulate their profit center.

Sorry, that's off-topic. I am all for the gas tax… Even though California seems to increase it every couple years. Now that I'm driving a Prius, I don't really give a flip.

If you are going to tax by mile, just go by the odometer. States with regular inspections are already tracking that.

For those that don't want to pay for miles out of state, the onus is on them to keep track and record those. The IRS doesn't reimburse people the expenses of tracking work miles on a private vehicle.

 

Maybe I should register in Montana too. Just kidding, the way Virginia gets around that is we say any car "garaged" in Virginia pays the tax.

 

Then you shouldn't have a problem documenting that for reducing your per mile state tax.

 

Should be as easy as documenting miles for work on your federal income taxes.

 

Why wouldn't they just take odometer affidavits when the registration is renewed?
It's already against the law to tamper with ODOs, and there are already programs in place (Carfax and others) that work pretty hard to identify odometer fraud.
Tyranical oppressively tax-happy nations abroad have been taxing people based on miles driven for years, and somehow I suspect that they just do odo statements.
I don't get why this is such a heavy lift unless you have inlaws who just happen to be (wink-wink!) "low bidder" on the GPS tracking units.....

(This is why you never let dot.gov run what could be simple programs.)

 

Not when you can outsource it to a private contractor who collects a 'fee.'
