I was driving home from town last night, and the combo meter went black. Or instrument cluster as some call it. I searched and studied the matter and tried the 30 second reset with the battery. Some say you have to do that when the cluster gets out of sync. After 30 seconds or more, I hooked up the battery and the meter came back on. Do I need to worry about this issue? Does this mean the combo meter is going bad or was it truly a sync problem?

Gen2 Combo Meter failure is a well known common failure in older Gen2 Prii and subject to extended warrranty but I suspect most of us are off warranty now. If I recall there was list of VINS and maybe after 2008 there were less defective units sold

You gotta replace it or a few here have posted how to electronically solder in a capacitor to fix it.
Also some posts on how to drive with it, turn off car etc

i wouldn't worry about it. if it happens again, i would just replace it.

but before i did that, i would make sure i have a healthy 12v.
