The jury is still out on the exact cause of the Prius fire. Until the insurers and manufacturer comes back with the results of their investigation, we don't actually know. That said, it does look to us that the fault lay with the block heater, or its cable.

True, but it is the prevailing theory, last we heard.

I would think that if there was a chance of overheating that the display would indicate CHECK ENGINE, then shut down. My last car (FORD) didn't have a temperature gauge and that's what they said it would do.

Thanks again for all the replies, everyone! As of right now, I haven't purchased it, as the dealer was unwilling to budge from their $20K+ price. While it's still a decent deal, it wasn't enough of a discount for me, as some of the brand new 2016 Prii that dealers are trying to clear out are in a similar range. If the dealer eventually lets the price drop, I'll post again if I decide to buy it.

For anyone who is curious, apparently the story behind this car is that the original owner is someone who goes through cars quickly, preferring to get a new one every 6 months or so. Sounds like an expensive habit, but to each their own, I guess.

Most 2016 Prius do not have the safety features that are standard on all 2017 Prius. They were only available as an optional package on upper trims.
To get my 2017 Trim Two features would have meant a 2016 Trim Three with the optional package.

    What's involved in those differences?

All 2017 Prius (including Trim Two) have TSS-P which includes:
    Lane Departure Alert
    Dynamic Radar Cruise Control
    Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection
    Automatic High Beams
According to the IIHS ratings, they also improved the headlights, reducing glare.
