Consumer Reports did a story about certain car models that excessively burned oil -- specific BMW, Audi, and Subaru engines were the worst offenders. CR gathered a half million surveys from customers. While CR considered burning oil unacceptable, the bottom line (quoting from the article): "Consumer Reports data does not show a direct connection between increased oil consumption and other engine problems."

CR felt it unacceptable that a consumer may have to purchase extra oil between oil changes -- the WORST offenders required five to seven extra quarts per year. At the going rate of about $7 per quart of fully synthetic oil purchased in bulk, that is about $35 to $50 extra per year. In the city where I live, that's the cost of a parking ticket. But each person must judge for themselves whether that extra cost per year is reason not to purchase a car.

So putting the two facts from CR together: Excessive oil consumption is no big deal except for the cost of the oil itself.

SOURCE: Excessive Oil Consumption Isn't Normal - Consumer Reports

For a 2010 Prius Four with 83,336 miles purchased from a dealer, $11K is a fair price, IMHO.

    You did. 21,722.

I wouldn't be worried about oil consumption issues for a 2010 with mileage that low. My 168K mile 2010 barely consumes oil.

maybe more concern about a car that has only been driven 2,500 miles/year.

the mileage is 83,336. The write up states "Recent Arrival! Odometer is 21459 miles below market average!", not that the odo says 21,459.

Thank you for the information. I kept reading things online and getting scared. It was purchased and serviced at the same dealer that is selling it its whole life.

so, maybe not worry, but concern? let's put it this way; there are a lot of complaints here. we don't know what percentage of cars or why.
as long as you can accept the possibility, and live with it if it happens, you're making an informed decision.

if the possibility bothers you, and you would be upset if you got a burner, i would move on.

After lots of negative car experiences, I'm weary of everything. Give me a different year and there will be another list of possible problems. It's down to how much I'm willing to deal with. I wouldn't mind high oil consumption as long as it didn't get out of control.

I purchased my 2010V with 83,000 for $9500 about a month ago. Haven't had a single issue and not experienced any oil burning. Not sure if it's worth the drive, but there is a nice clean one owner 2012 with 103,000 I looked at before I went with this one. It didn't have leather or navigation, but it was only $9000.

i would say most of the complaints are still within toyota's acceptable parameters, so no big deal really. just need to check it often, and top up as needed.

    I
I brought it up to the dealer and they guaranteed that it's not one of the issue cars. I'll keep an eye on it. Thank you so much for all the help!

I don't believe that they are. Sounds like standard-issue dealer BS to me. (I know this thread is old and I'm exhuming it, I just don't want readers who see it later to be misled.)
