To clarify: WV was giving 7,500 and the Fed's 2,500 made for 10k in credits. I may or may not have been flipping cars for a couple years accumulating state tax credits that don't expire for 4 years from the year of purchase...

WV repealed the plugin/EV credit last year. Only Nat. Gas gets the credit now.
In other news a Nat. Gas pipeline co. wants to run a 42 in. line from Clarksburg WV (N. Cent.) to somewhere in N. Carolina to take all the Frac gas away. We of course will still be served by undersized and failing 60 to 100 year old lines. (Oh wait what forum and thread is this...)

I agree, said that too - "why not wait because of advancements?"
But the state of MA changed that - approving $2500 back right away in addition to the $7500 Fed incentive. And the thing about the MA rebate is that it will run out and very possibly within 10 months.
All that allowed almost an even trade of a 1 1/2 yr old PiP for a 2014 Volt listing for many many thousands more

Now we hear the next version will have a larger 17 vs 13 battery. So that would mean I'd get approximately a 70 mile range vs 50 something now. That really doesn't do anything for me given my driving range. Maybe someone with that longer 50+ commute would value it

How do you think the Volt will work out in the winter with 15 degrees to -25 below temps?
How much will the ICE run? and affect mpg?

My friend in his Volt experienced the same % loss as my PiP last winter - about a 33% loss
So yeah no doubt I'm going down but 50+ to mid or high 30's is something I can deal with.
Remember I was 90% EV in that PiP...

    Yeah! I remember (believe me)!
Does the volt always start the ICE after 15 degrees and colder? Or can you use it like we do with the PIP?

I will say that we don't get as cold as in your part of the country

IIRC- with my PIP at 15 deg as soon as I crept out the driveway the ICE started. Is you PIP different?

    Yeah, thanks Rob!
and I fully agree - driving the PiP helped immensely - the Volt crazy green ball doesn't train you like the PiP controls
Honestly I think I've been at 60 or a bit higher last few days to raise the EV est to this. I don't drain it down as much so harder to be precise on that...

ps the Volt threads are dead and don't compare to these

I would sneak out of my heated gargage and go 2.7 miles to coffee no ICE, going home after coffee temps would moderate and Most days if above 15 degrees I could make it home also.
    Thanks Rob!

This is not correct. The new 2015 Volt comes with a slightly larger 17.1 kWh battery up from the 16.5. It's NOT 17.1 of usable range. Should be good for an easy 40 miles EPA but GM didn't go through the EPA test again. This should mean an "easy" 50 mile range for anyone not doing pure highway, really cold temps, etc.

I got my Volt on March 18th and drove it to work on the 19th. It did snow that day- but it only went down to maybe 20f.
I think the coldest I've seen in the Volt is 16-17f and the ICE never started.

got it - I'm clearly a Volt newbie... So current is 13 usable ?

My point remains though - those improvements don't do anything for me. Wanted my MA tax $ now !

The Volt would act the same if kept in a heated garage.
My Volt lives outside and cold soaks over night like my PIP did. My PIP's ICE used to fire up at mid 20's temps as soon as I drove over 20mph because it had been sitting unprotected for 14hrs most weekdays. I honestly don't know what the Volt's going to do when it get's down in the single digits- but it has electric cabin heat and engine assisted cabin heat. Guess I'll get back to you in about five months :(
