So how much $$$$$ do you save on gasoline over 200,000 miles versus a full size SUV ?

I have saved over $11,000 in 7 tears and 191,000 miles compared to my Jetta (23 MPG).

Probably better because Prius was new tech back then.

So fun to calculate the savings. Pre-Prius I used to drive like a maniac, so 20 mpg is generous for back then. I would guess I'll be able to get at least 55 mpg for the life of the car.

    200,000 miles/20 mpg = 10,000 gallons @ today's price of $3.18 = $31,800
    200,000 miles/55 mpg = 3,636.4 gallons @ today's price of $3.18 = $11,563.64

I'd save $20,236.36, easily more than I paid for the car! Hope to keep it that long :)

that's great. I can't get 55 mpg, so at 40 mpg, i agree with you that we've saving a boatload of money.

TOYOTA should turn this into a marketing campaign. Have a commercial with dozens of people saying "I've saved over X thousand dollars on gasoline with my Prius." That would be awesome! They could list hundreds of people that have saved thousands.

What? You mean the floor mats haven't yet climbed up over the accelerator pedal?

i wonder how long will these new hybrids with AT transmissions and multiple clutches last... design seems a lot more complicated than PSD.

Prior to purchasing my Prius, I was driving an Infiniti G35 Coupe, which got about 17 MPG on premium fuel.

    200,000 / 17mpg * $3.50 = $41176
    200,000 / 45mpg * $3.20 = $14222
    ---------------------------------------
    Total: +$26954

Considering I'm already over 150K miles, these numbers are real. Plus, add in the maintenance of the G -vs- the P and I've saved enough to afford a loaded CT200h.

You bring up an excellent point. Everyone is always talking about whether the battery can survive 200,000 miles. This 200,000 mile Prius shows all of us that the HSD can survive 200,000 miles. :)

Thanks for this news. I don't think that many people know about how long the brakes last on a Prius. This would also save money over 200,000 miles of driving.

Brakes still need maintenance. I hope you are not skimping on that thinking they last forever.

CR chose one Prius which is still running at 200k , ran it for a few days and proclaimed it's as good as new.

Why didn't they pick one from the junkyard instead ?
