Consumer Reports on this at least was not as bad as US News & World Report a couple years ago. They panned the Prius totally, and said they had asked an official with the EPA to drive the car around Washington DC -- and the most he could get was 46 MPG.

At the time I was letting my then-16-year-old daughter drive the car to school (60-mile round trip, partially on I-5) and even as a newbie driver (a TEENAGER, of all things!) even she averaged 52 MPG.

Then you take the car guy for USA Today... whenever he test drives the Prius he complains about the "shudder" when the gas engine shuts off / turns on. A little shudder? Oh my! Better stick to your 13 MPG behemoth with its weighty smoothness. (Although I think he grudgingly noted the 2010 is better in this regard.)
