    Fuel economy is an important factor to consider when buying a new car, even when gas prices are down. History has shown that they won't stay that way forever. Many conventional cars today offer impressive fuel economy, especially in contrast to what you may be trading in. Further, alternative powertrains offer an increasing array of choices, with diesels, electrics, and hybrids each carrying appeal for different drivers.

    Measuring fuel economy is among our more than 50 tests we conduct on each car we purchase. Our fuel economy numbers are derived from a precision flow meter and are rounded to the nearest mile per gallon (mpg).

    CR's overall mileage is calculated from equal portions of city and highway driving.

    Below, we spotlight the top most fuel-efficient cars based on the overall fuel economy test results, omitting electric cars. Complete test results can be found by clicking through to the model pages.

    I'm surprised, pleasantly. Now if MPG were added to their "scoring" system . . .

    I was pretty please by their comments in the 2017 Annual Auto Issue.

    On a Side note, they rate the Camry Hybrid at 38 mpg. We used to get 35 on interstate highway trips in our old '98 Camry 4 cylinder. :D

    It is in City traffic that the superiority of hybrid system shines and many of us are in urban driving most of the time.

    Historically CR has a problem with their City rating for hybrids which gave Gen2/3 Prius like 30 MPG City which is nuts.

    They have a pay-wall to the car detailed report but the web page format suggests they might have finally gotten a clue. I'll have to check the paper copy. If they finally figured out how to test the car and rate it, I may subscribe again.

    Have you seen any announcement of a revamp of the car rating and testing?

    I got the subscription for the paper version, but even after I set up an account on their web site, it won't let me see subscriber stuff. When I log in, it just tells me again to log in. Someone should do a Consumer Report on the web site. :oops:

    By what precisely?
    That their top fuel efficient cars as tested were hybrids? They drive all the cars the same way; hybrids that do poorly should still do better than the ICE models.

    They've always used a flow meter to measure fuel consumption. It's where and how they do the driving that is the issue, and that doesn't appear to have changed.
    They got 43mpg city for the gen4 in the link. All the other hybrids were down in the thirties.

    The Mirage was the only ICE model, and it got 28mpg city and 47mpg highway. The Prius c tested 1mpg higher there, the Prius v and CT200h tied it, and it was better than nearly everybody else. Again the gen4 was the standout with superior tested highway.

    I must have missed something in the article. The guy/author acts like he's going to talk about "choices" ... casually mentioning Plugins - electrics - hybrids .... yet nary a one made the list. Too bad there, Ioniq - i3 - i8 - Prime - Tesla - Volt - Bolt - Leaf - Et Al ... you and your ilk just got relegated to the chopped liver category, and the fact that you are all more efficient means nothing. Yea - i don't imagine I'll be renewing our CR subscription anytime soon.

    we just got 40 mpg at the pump in our 2013 hycam, from orlando to rocky mount, nc. 620 miles at mostly 70 mph.

    when driving to the resort in orlando, once south of new jersey, i don't look to the left or the right until i get past the guard shack.

    i did catch it out of the corner of my eye. i just don't want to make eye contact with any pick up drivers with gun racks and confederate flags flying.

    Do remember that 'they', particularly CU/CR, is different than 'we', so those numbers are not comparable. Historically, CU's lead-footed mpg testers frequently get lower MPG results than many of us. When 'they' report 38, 'we' have a good probability of getting well into the 40s.

    Absolutely. But, as long as they are consistent (and I don't know if they are), it gives a bit of a comparison car to car. The EPA estimates are also not quite real world for most of us. What they need to do is to just ask the PC gang here and take an average. ;)
