the major failure issue was in a small first run- a tapered seal was being installed backward by some dumbass at the assembly plant. but those were pretty much immediate failures. as far as the rpm spike issue, the more common one, there's a software patch to fix that. but the biggest issue he saw in sheer number of complaints was that it shifts TOO smoothly...

again, if you're looking for a v6, ya might as well get the avalon. down here, price range for a v6 camry puts you in avalon range anyway.

the 1mz is a long lived engine that's had all its kinks worked out. so it's unsurprising because it is more refined than the gr's which have been around since oh, 04. the mz's came out in 92.

the highlander gets the new gr engine, 2gr he thinks? and the hihy was a carryover using the mz.

the gr definitely is noisier, yes. the ones he's seen were port injected (direct must just be on the lexus then), and they were still noisier.

regardless of what causes the increased compression, the end result remains the same and that is higher pressure in the cylinders. he's not concerned overall but specifically long term he wonders. he still wonders if any compensation was made for the extra force.

he hasn't really gotten into that part of the industry... he just knows about what's out now ;)
