I believe that was about half of my point. Jayman places blame on pharma. Like I said, that is also justified.

    But side where you will.

I don't place 100% of the blame on the pharma industry, but I do lump a large portion of the blame on them.

The big problem I have with them is the deceptive advertising campaign they use to peddle their products. Only very recently, thanks to class action lawsuits and federal regulation, has any mention of "normal" and "expected" side effects been required.

All these ads appear to promise a fun and easy cure to whatever ailment the patient has, or whatever the patient thinks they have. You know, a quick cure, which in real life is hocus-pocus.

Many patients face a clear dichotomy: on the one hand their specialist or GP goes into detail about all the scary aspects of their condition and the side effects of any treatment; on the other hand, the cheery jingle promises a quick and easy cure.

And we wonder why patient/doctor mistrust has *grown* over the years??

And forget about "educating" the general public on something as complex as prescription meds. If a patient so desires, thanks to the new regulations, they can even view the chemical makeup of a medication. Which is fine if you have a four year degree in chemical engineering or some other equally rare skill.

I think the pharma industry as a whole had to peddle to the consumer to increase market share. The "detailer" sent to the doctor office has limited returns, as most doctors are highly educated and are suspicious of new promised quick cures.

I'll lay off the pharma industry once they quit all this insulting and dangerous advertising. Especially for magic pills that promise 36 hour erections.

If a patient has a problem, they should go to their GP or specialist, talk things over, and determine the appropriate modality with the least risk involved. Not watch a silly commercial and tell the doctor "I want that!"

America has become all about instant gratification. It is all encompassing and now even affects health care. People get sick and expect to get a pill that makes them better immiediately with little or no effort on their end. It's depressing. I think the whole culture of this place probably feeds into all these drug problems.

Jayman, it was nice debating with you. You are a very intelligent guy.

Canada too. Perhaps not to the same extent, as a lot of the newer prescription wonders aren't available in Canada, or the socialized medicine doesn't cover them.

This problem is endemic and is actually a symptom of a much larger problem. Whether it's easy money, easy credit, zero down, shop till you drop, etc etc, it's a culture of instant gratification.

Ironically, the "instant" gratification has left folks feeling much less satisfied with their personal lives. Time to get back to basics and enjoy what life really is all about.

For example, at my hobby farm the only internet access is a dial-up connection that I refuse to use. I usually leave the ringer off too. So I can completely forget about the world while I'm there imagining the old barn filled with critters like horses and cows and chickens.

You too. Unfortunately, "witty intelligent debater" is quite far down on the list of most eligible women. Oh well, the cat still seems to appreciate it ...
