There's already a thread discussing this from a few days ago.

    The latest update is this;

Clarkson: We hid under bed from rampaging mob of Argentinians who threatened to barbecue us (... and yes, that numberplate WAS a coincidence) | Daily Mail Online

The people who've lived on the Falklands for longer than Argentina has been a country still want to be British. Seems fair. Perhaps they will change their minds when the US hand back Hawaii and Guam? Or maybe Texas or California? In fact, I believe the Falklands have been in the hands of the British longer than you guys have been independent. Perhaps you should scrap your constitution and give your land back to the Native Americans? Why not? Just a thought. Politics isn't easy is it?

Grumpy, are you replaying the scene from that movie when MT asks Alex Haig if the US begged Japan to please turn over Hawaii after Pearl Harbor when Haig suggested Britain negotiate the Falklands back? :D:D:D

It was Queen Victoria's grandson Kaiser Wilhelm II that killed Britain and Europe as the premier world economic power a hundred years, ago, with the start of World War I.

The United States became the financiers to both sides in the war and came out to be the world's premier economic power replacing Great Britain.

Indeed. But every economic power or empire, call it what you will, will come and go. Your time is up now and it's China's turn. Well you're about the point we were at in the 1950's. You're still in denial but you're on that downward slope.

Around 1910/1920 America was amazing, you had skyscrapers, highways, modern cities the like of which had never been seen. That was your equivalent of our 1850's. You've now become stagnant and complacent. This amazing growth that we had in 1850 and you in 1920 is replaced by China in 2010. Who has the amazing, futuristic cities? Who has 300 mph railways? Who is expanding? It's isn't you and it sure isn't us. Where are the tallest buildings being built? In 1930 is was America, now it's not.

Our time went years ago and now it's yours. The future belongs to China and Asia.

It's how you handle this change. Do you adjust or do you do a Russia?

Kaiser Wilhelm II apparently harkened back to the 1870's when Bismarck and his predecessor Wilhelm I and Bismarck won the Franco-Prussian War and financed the construction of Berlin with the war reparations paid by the France. Instead, he destroyed the German Empire and many others along with it and weakened all of Europe as an economic power.

Even the loss of the Franco-Prussian War, France ushered in the Belle Époque which ended with the start of WWI.

The only event that is yet to happen with the Asian Zone is the fall of the Communist governments in China, Vietnam an North Korea.

There is a lot of difference between Communist and Socialist.

The worst form of Libertarianism is anarchy.

    GrumpyCabbie,

The odds are America will go into decline because of our internal problems, Not inevitable, but likely we will do to ourselves what no nation on the outside could do.

A good way to tell if the rot has set in is if important infrastructure is cancelled because of some newts or rare ants live there already.

For all of you naysayers, it was the "socialist" leaning Progressives under Theodore Roosevelt and FDR that made this country great in the 1950's. The infrastructure improved by leaps and bounds through their efforts.

The current atmosphere of "everyman for himself" and making and siphoning off all the money that corporations can keep at the expense of the infrastructure that is leading this country to decline.

i don't see how it's every man for himself under president o'bama. i have no problem with social leanings, and you're right, communism is completely different. but there are no 'socialist countries i want to emulate.

I agree but it's not the BBC, it's the independent production company.

If you see some photos you'll notice the existing numberplate (H1VAE) which has two velcro strips either side that originally held the offending H982FKL plate that had been stuck on top. Unless I'm mistaken of course. That car on the left does look like a Porsche.

I think he's over done it this time. Whatever the politics of the situation, hundreds of Argie soldiers died in the conflict and feelings run high. If three Argentinians did the same over here, I'm sure the result would have been the same. And despite 70 years passing and everyone knowing that modern day Germans had absolutely nothing to do with WWII, if three Germans drove around Coventry in a similar disrespectful manner making reference to the war, they too would be lucky to get out alive.

Argentinian tourists would be welcome here, but if they took the piss like Clarkson did, they'd probably get a good thumping. He's gone too far this time, way too far.

Update: Just done a bit of lateral thinking. I've checked the UK Government website to see if the Porsche is insured and taxed. Under H1VAE it is. That reg is a white 2006 Porsche 3.6 litre and is taxed and insured until November 2014. The reg H982FKL IS registered as a 1991 grey 5 litre Porsche and is taxed and safety checked until May 2015.

So it looks like it was a genuine registration number.

check it here - don't put spaces in the reg number

The plate number? Just seems to be inevitable with the numbering format for UK plates. If anyone had considered it might be offensive to Argentinians, they likely brushed it off with a, "what are the chances of a car with this plate being driven in Argentina."
