The cruise control in my 2004 Prius has stopped working. Here are the systems I saw over time as it went out. At first it would just randomly not work when I would push the on/off button it wouldn't turn on the cruise control and no light on the dash of course. Then it just plain quit one day. One thing I did note is that the lighted button on my steering wheel aren't lighting up either. They function just no lights. However, I noticed that when I turn the steering wheel they would come on randomly. So I thought, humm, maybe the cruise control will work now. So while I had the wheel turned at a stop and the steering wheel was light up I pressed the CC button and it turn on the dash light. I thought okay maybe it will work now. So I drove off and tried to engage the cruise but nada. The dash light was on but it would engage cruise. Any thoughts? I looked through a few posts here and I'm thinking maybe the steering clockspring or CC switch is to blame. I'm leaning more to the clockspring though. Help. I miss my cruise.

Those are classic symptoms pointing to the spiral cable, a/k/a "clockspring". It flexes when you turn the wheel.

That is what I am thinking as well from what I've read here. Do you have any recommendation on a good replacement?

Replacing that clock spring can be tricky because you must deal with the air bag.

Another common cause of cruise failure is brake lights stuck ON.

The brake lights stuck ON, though, usually won't coincide with the illumination of your steering wheel buttons going out, and depend on which way you turn the wheel.

    True. Usually.
Then there is the unusual. :)
