My 2007 Prius, 181189 miles, made a crunching sound when I left the freeway this am while stopping. No shaking, vibration or noises while going at speed. When first accelerating I hear a crunch then clicking. This happened at each stop until I parked. Sounds fine when going in reverse.
    Any ideas?
I am at work and am wondering if I need a tow truck or try to drive 75 miles home tonight?

If there's no warning lights on, and the brakes are working properly. I would make the drive home and then try to determine what's causing the sound.

If you have insurance, or AAA like coverage then I don't think a tow truck usually costs that much.

From other posts, and other happenings, the damage that might be prevented can often make the expense well worth it.
Not to mention, IMO the most important aspect which is safety.

Worst case scenario? You pay for a Tow Truck, go through the hassle of waiting for it, and having your vehicle towed, and discover the problem was very, very minor, and you could of driven it safely. Net Loss...a little time, a little money.

If the problem is more serious, or the type of problem that can be worsened by further driving? And given that it's seems to either be brake or transmission related, NOT towing could result in a much worse outcome. Including a safety risk.

I could be totally wrong...but in this case, I'm willing to be wrong. I'd call a tow truck.

sounds like something was caught in the caliper, and now it has been reduced to a minor annoyance. jack it up and spin the from tyres. if no odd sounds or feel, pull the tyres off and inspect the calipers and pads.

Thanks. That was my first guess (calipers) but I couldn't see/feel anything (only had a brief look before going to work). At 181,000 plus miles this is my first mechanical problem. I have no experience with, nor knowledge, of the re-gen breaking or the Prius drivetrain so I am in the dark if it isn't calipers.
AAA is towing it to my mechanic and I get a ride from a co-worker. Gotta love AAA!

Could the transmission be the problem?

i hope not. don't recall anyone complaining about tranny noises.

otoh, if you intend to keep it for awhile, a salvaged tranny is cheap, and not too bad to install.
