Right, all of those could be running on either fuel. Optimize all usage.

I think that Toyota means that optimizing is using the less of each fuel per mile. Thus they wanted HV mode that gets the highest mpg and they wanted EV mode that uses the least kwh per mile.

While GM did not design the Volt with these priorities. IIRC they said they wanted the EV mode, not to be the maximum but set it at ~40 miles because this is enough to handle x% of the US population's daily commute. (Or they picked a number and justified it this way). Either way, the small trunk is the result. For some, a perfectly OK tradeoff. But I'm sure there are Volt owners who would rather have a 20 or 30 mile battery and more trunk space. Just like I'm sure there are PIP owners who would rather have less trunk space and a bigger battery. Just like there are even more Prius owners who seem to prefer and even bigger trunk (and spare tire) and a tiny battery with no plug.

Some people in that thread got their PiPs for $24k.

General Motors has cut the price of the 2013 Chevrolet Volt by $4,000 to boost stalling sales.

Nearly three years after the Volt debuted, sales of the extended-range electric car appear to be hitting a wall, and the steeper incentives will make the car even costlier for GM.

The price cuts come in the form of incentives of as much as $4,000 for those buying 2013 Volts and up to $5,000 for 2012 Volts. Those incentives are in addition to a $7,500 federal tax credit and a $1,500 state tax credit for those who live in California.

Will there be a Volt 2.0 ? Perhaps the bailout stipulated.
