    ps. Editorial:

I did not buy a 2016 Prius Level 2 ECO because TSS-P was not an option in May 2016. Then the 2017 Prius Prime arrived in November 2016 in three levels, Plus, Premium, and Advanced, and showed up with TSS-P and priced to sell. IMHO, the 1.8L engine and transaxle has moved to a new, sweet spot.

The addition of a one-way clutch is the first generation of a plug-in future that can replace the Prius family ... changing the body style to match customer expectations and battery scalable. It is priced (today) to be an affordable answer to the 21st century transportation needs. BTW, to get the next step in MPG, the Prius family needs to complete the first 5 minutes of warm-up. This is where the ability to move in just EV mode while the engine reaches a warm enough state that is needed.

Now I appreciate the EV pioneers and wish them well. Just living in a fly-over state, I love the concept of a family of plug-ins sharing drivetrains with traction batteries sized to match the customer requirements. A wonderful future.

Before the Prime, the 2017 Prius Level 2 ECO was released with TSS-P as standard. The Prime will be more fun to dissect though.

Announced but the 2017 Prius Prime pretty well muted my interest. We have a 2014 BMW i3-REx and I like driving EV but I love driving with dynamic cruise control and with accident avoidance. Safety sells.

My Level 2 was purchased from the lot in October. I saw them in September. This was shipping, not just announced, although my clueless local dealer said Level Two only had black interior. Drove 150 miles & saved $2K. :D

    Go Prime Go!
I was a little upset at the older "Prime DOA" thread, and I never thought it was DOA (partially due to incentives, but hey, the point is it is selling)

I just noticed that you date each months figures as being on the 15th of the month and have been doing so for several months. Why that date? Thanks for keeping us up to date.

Toyota clearly remains the leader with over 23,000 sales. The one Toyota hybrid that amazes me that anybody buys is the NX 300h. The cost of the hybrid over the nonhybrid is over $4500 while the for the Rav4 the Hybrid "premium" is $750.

Although every month has a 1st, the last day can vary from 28-31 yet the sales happen between the first and last day of any month. As a quick hack, I pick the 15th as being reasonably close to the middle of each month so roughly half of the monthly sales fall on either side.
One month is interesting but I prefer to look at the last four months to avoid any 'tricks.'

Accord Hybrid is going up & Camry Hybrid is going down. That should tell us something...

Will be interesting to see how the new 2018 Camry Hybrid compares to the 2017 (and 2018) Accord Hybrid...

i don't think the hycam has ever been able to come close to the other hybrid sedans on the epa test.

i know but judging by the meager gen 4 increase, i'm not hopeful. unless they come up with a new clutch or something, like the prime.

The Prime clutch serves the EV only mode. In the HV I see no particular benefit in increasing the ICE = 0rpm vehicle velocity, since it is around 70MPH already.

gonna be tough for them to play catch up then. the 40 mpg sedan is going the way of the horse and buggy.

I see the advantage in unloaded engine warmup. Ask me about it in 3 weeks.

I was pointing to the Gen 4 HV model, the clutch would serve only very strict scenarios...

But for sure I will follow your reviews ;)

Actually if is part of my secret plan to make the Prius Prime architecture the standard hybrid architecture:
    • adjustable traction battery size - 2 mile; 5 mile; 10 mile; 20 mile; 50 mile; 100 mile ...
By happy accident (2016 Level 2 ECO w/o TSS-P), I skipped the Gen-4 and went with the CARB flawed, BMW i3-REx. Yet even CARB's hydrogen-fueled fantasies could not suppress the advantages of the BMW i3 plug-in.

Having done the experiment, I am convinced the Prius Prime can solve the last, major Prius limitation, the warm-up cost. There are alternative approaches: (1) tuning the engine to run efficiently starting at a lower block temperature; (2) co-generation for home owners, or; (3) plug-in to warm-up the car, both engine block and cabin.
