    • Fusion Hybrid and Prius Liftback - are running neck and neck

    About two weeks ago, I met the Nashville Tesla team at the high-speed, DC charger with about half a dozen City utility employees. The Tesla CHAdeMO would not connect. So to test the charger, I plugged in using the CSS and everything worked. Then last week, I got some calls from Tesla in Nashville asking if I wanted a 'test drive.' I called them back and let them know I'm a plug-in hybrid owner, quite happy with our BMW i3-REx and Prius Prime.

    How in the world do you recover development/parts-support costs for all the brands/models selling less than a hundred a month?

    Tesla doesn't report sales the same way the rest of the market does; They do it quarterly, I believe. Monthly numbers from other sources are best guesses.

    only through zev credits, i guess, but idk the details. and maybe they consider it r&d. sergio fiat said they lose money with every sale.

    Development costs and support are not segmented by model. The manufacturer spreads them across all of their models.
    So the high profit trucks help pay for development of low volume cars.

    New tech is expensive, but if companies don't continue research into areas that currently have small profits, they run the risk of being way far behind when the market conditions change.

    Saw my 2nd Bolt in the wild today, this time on the road, not in parking lot. I bet the Model 3 is going to crush Bolt in monthly US sales by early next year.

    Bolt nationwide? Try to find one. Much speculation on the compliance driven nature of their distribution to CA almost entirely.

    A national lease program announced with cash down outside CA around twice what would be needed in CA.

    The Bolt is not nationwide. The scheduled nationwide rollout starts in September.

    Even though MN isn't getting theirs until September, there is a local dealer that bought a CA one and gives test drives with it:)

    In no particular order, pre-bankruptcy:
    • GEO Metro - a cabin between two motorcycles with some resemblance to a car
    • Chevette - proof that something shaped like a car could be made from tin cans
    • EV1 - snatching defeat from the jaws of victory
    • Bob Lutz - on any subject including the Prius 2000-2008
    • 'Mild' hybrids - you can pay more but you can't get less
    • Two-mode transmissions - how to make a really heavy, expensive, inefficient transmission
    • "Hybrid" - in body paint, cheaper than making an efficient car
    I've never doubted GM engineering could do great cars. But too often, their engineers have done interesting projects, their training, before they graduate to a real job.

    Interesting to see VA on top of the Bolt list.
    I think two reasons alls I can think of:
    (1) close to B'more MD shipping port,
    (2) Wash DC has great incentives but no dealers so VA is DC supplier (in addition to MD)

    Also I guess an MD buyer could come over to VA, unlike Toyota, I am thinking GM would not cancel CARB coverage if you bought in VA...just guessing. I have to check batt warranty CARB v. non-CARB for Bolt.
