Hey, I recently bought a 2016 Prius. I noticed that when I turn the car on (before the engine) all of the dashboard symbols light up. I'm worried because some of them, notably the check engine and charging system warning lights, stay on after the others shut off. I'm unsure if there is a problem or not because all of the warning lights shut off after the engine starts.

Have you looked in the owners manual to see if that’s normal?

I heard you aren't allowed to look at the owner's manual unless you pay for the dash light vehicle upgrade package? Maybe that's not true? But that's what the dealership told me.

The lights are generally color coded. Green lights are something you turned on, or are normal. Yellow lights are caution lights. You may have a problem. Red lights are warning lights. You do have a problem.

The green ones can be ignored, the yellow ones should be monitored. The red ones, you should operate your car at your own risk.

And if you see a tunnel of white light, no need to pull over cause you're already dead....

It sounds like you’re starting the car by pressing the power switch without the brake pedal pressed, which puts the car into ON mode. This mode is similar to the key-on/engine-off state on a conventional car, and it’s not needed for normal operation. The warning lights you describe are correct for ON mode, since the hybrid system isn’t available to start the engine or charge the auxiliary (12-volt) battery.

Instead of using ON mode, I’d suggest starting the car directly to READY mode, as described on page 225 of the Owner’s Manual (PDF). Set the parking brake, press the brake pedal and keep it pressed, and then press and release the power switch only once.

Yea... We're hoping @bisco to do this for himself for years now. Problem is he never stops so there's no startup health check... He just keeps going and going. Seriously do you ever take a break from PriusChat? How can 80K comments not be enough yet?
