Hey guys, I need help with my 2001 Prius. More and more lately, my 12v battery is dead when I get in the car. It only takes 1 or 2 seconds with my jump pack to start it, then it reads full voltage. Anyone else have this problem? Seems to me like it is something simple somewhere.

The only help you need is from a new battery.

Time to buy a 12v battery... Let us know if you want info about options... Make sure you don't buy an Optima, they don't do quality control and have no concern about re-selling defective batteries and lots of 'em.

Any car will read around 14 volts once the car is started, regardless of battery status.

Are you personally capable of replacing your 12v battery ?

Or would you need someone to do it for you ?

That doesn't explain how it can go for days just fine, then be dead for a few, then be fine again.

The reason is because the 12v battery doesn’t actually start the car, the traction battery does. 12v just boots up computers and can run on very low voltage. What’s your standing Voltage?

That "full voltage" may not be coming from the battery, it may be the result of the car trying to charge the battery. You test the battery when the car is running, maybe you're measuring what the car is producing.

Anyone else have this problem? Seems to me like it is something simple somewhere.

Expired 12 volt battery is the simplest explanation.

Put a new battery in a few days ago. Wouldn't start this morning without a jump. Voltage was 11.9

you need to do some testing. take the battery back and have them charge it. then check the voltage after a few hours.
then install it, check the voltage again and every morning before starting the car, until you're comfortable that its holding near 13 volts, or not.
if not, you have a defective battery, or a bad charging system.
