Dealership used wrong oil - 5k vs 10k?

Actually Honda recommends no filter ever other oil change. Same price for the service.

 

How many qts on the paperwork? The dealer is charging back from Toyota for 6 qt of 0W-16. With filter change it should be 4.4qt. Unless this is a standard system item and 6qt as max Toyota will pay back (see asterisks at the end).

Hard to tell pictures but it shows the dipstick at 15 min after warmup and 24 hrs cold.

A bit messy but its oil. At least the filter cover is re-installed. I'll probably change the oil/filter at the 20 month/20K miles interval like I've done on the previous Tundra and 4Runners.

A good way to see the dip stick oil level with very clean oil is to lay the dip stick on a clean white paper towel. The oil will soak into the paper and be easy to see.

 

Mis-type?....5W-30 for Gen 2. or maybe 5W-20 for Gen 3?

Yep.....a clogged filter is a disaster. I never let a filter go beyond the manufacturer's oil change mileage spec, but I usually change the oil twice as often as I replace the filter.

So at 5k I would drain and refill the oil, at 10k drain & refill oil and replace filter, at 15k drain and refill oil, and at 20k drain and refill and replace filter. Like that there.

I read a study about lightly used filters providing a higher level of protection than a new filter. It made sense.

The filter issue is another great reason for DIY oil change's. Lots of people have left garages with the same filter they drove in with, after paying for a new one that was "out of stock".

And, the more resistance in the filter media the more oil will flow through the filter's internal bypass valve and not get filtered. The bypass valve is to allow thick cold oil to bypass the filter media without ripping it apart, or oil to bypass a very dirty filter without ripping it. WIX has great specs on line. Their 51394 spin on filter for some Primes is listed as having a filter bypass that begins to open at 8 pounds per square inch differential and is fully open at 11 psid. This is the difference in the oil pressure from the filter inlet to the filter outlet...say, 50 psi in and 42 psi out.

 

Which does NOT happen to any significant amount unless and until the filter gets REAL dirty or the oil gets REALLY thick.

The bypass valve is not really there to prevent damage to the filter under normal operating conditions.
The total filter area where the oil flows through is something like 50 times larger that the inlet and outlet.
Thus the pressure DROP across the filter media is just about ZERO, even though the pressure in the lines might be 50 PSI.

 

Depends on the actual viscosity of the oil at the temperature of the moment. On a cold winter morning the oil is more like caramel ice cream syrup than what we think of as oil. Maybe not that thick. Someone about to change their oil can put a bottle of 0W-20 into a zero degree F home freezer and show us how it pours at zero. Then let it warm and go ahead with their oil change.
