JK Rowling has revealed the inspiration behind the symbol for the Deathly Hallows.

Speaking in a new BBC documentary, the author says it's connected to a film that came out more than 40 years ago.

The film features a Masonic symbol - and is similar to the one that appears in Harry Potter.

She says she was watching the film when she found out her mother had died - and that something must have sunk in on a "subconscious level".

    • Vertical is the 'Elder Wand' - the most powerful wand in the series
    • Circle is the 'Cloak of Invisibility' - which allows the wearer to be hidden from death
    • Triangle is the 'Resurrection Stone' - brings back the dead
Recently I got this medallion from Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) for one year without alcohol:

Different size order but similar shapes ... a funny coincidence.

She wrote the first book, if I recall correctly, in cafes in Edinburgh.

Both Glasgow and Edinburgh have a lot of Masonic history, and a lot of Masonic buildings. (Also a lot of soccer referees who are Masons and who are biased against the team I support because it has a large Catholic following, but that's another story.) I wouldn't be surprised if there were some Masonic symbols in her line of sight while she was writing.
