Maybe due to reach/length or something. I used a deep 9/16" socket (6 face, Jet brand) when I had a look at the plugs (around 60K kms), no problems. Since then I acquired a swivel spark plug socket set, included a 9/16".

9/16" and 14mm are so close in practice (9/16" is the larger, but by less than 0.29 mm) I would not expect any real difficulty.

I still have a stout Proto six-point 9/16" box wrench that, from my earliest days, was my go-to option when something was too stubborn for my 14 mm twelve-point sockets from Kmart.

Yes, that is/was the problem. Nice extension set. Something for my next "shopping trip" this coming spring.

That website, operated for Toyota by Bosch, sells special service tools (SSTs), as listed in the Master Index (PDF), which tend to be specific to Toyota and Lexus vehicles. The oil filter wrench (09228-06500-02A) is an SST, listed on page 10 of the Index.

The spark plug wrench comes from Toyota’s line of general automotive hand tools, described in their Service Tool catalog (in Japanese) and made for Toyota by KTC, Vessel, O.H. Industrial, and other leading Japanese manufacturers. These tools are listed in the Repair Manual series, but as far as I know, Toyota doesn’t sell them in the U.S.; I assume there are enough good alternatives that it wouldn’t be profitable to do so.

The one advantage that oil filter wrench (why are they not called sockets??) has over the current Honda automotive version, is the cut-out, which is handy if the filter is stuck on. In the '80's, Honda used a significantly larger oil filter, and the 64 mm face-to-face oil filters were just for motorcycles. I had the automotive and motorcycle versions. The former is just a relic now; it did have that cut-out though.

Anyway, apart from the cut-out, the current Toyota SST oil filter wrench looks to be identical in design to Honda. Here's the old Honda automotive oil filter wrench (on left), and current (on right). It's working for me, on Toyota, Honda, and Mazda:

I believe this is the (current) part number for the Honda version:

    07AAA-PLCA100

Though any dealership parts department would have that at their fingertips.

I can assure you the 9/16th is the perfect size

Well, it's not quite the perfect size—it's 0.2875 mm too big.

But that's probably not going to stop you changing your spark plugs.

It depends on WHO made the socket, on how correct it is. And and how accurate the plugs are made.

9/16" is slightly looser, than 14 mm, all things being equal. It seems to work ok though, with 6 face socket.
