Yes, this is all very valid. My understanding, though, is that LM is claiming to have made some theoretical breakthroughs, and the Guardian rubbished even that. This is why I don't know what to believe.
A long, long, long time ago (1988, I think), I worked at the McDonald's on South Shore in Blackpool (the one on the prom, on the Illuminations route, if you know it). I once picked up an apple pie to take it to a customer, and it burst as I was on the way back to the counter. The "apple" "sauce" fell on my shoe. I was wearing black Clarks leather shoes (for the Americans, these are your moderately-expensive, no-nonsense basic leather shoes for school and stuff - they're indestructible). The "apple" "sauce" burnt through the black leather, and left a hole, surrounded by white, dessicated leather. I have never eaten once since. But I still think they could solve the world's energy crisis.
Those look like the old, fried ones. Here in America the health Nazis and other buzz-kills have eliminated those from Mickey-D's menu. We get luke-warm baked ones.
