Did NAV and Bluetooth get fixed?

Has anyone driven one and tested the NAV and Bluetooth? The Entune platform looks to be the same as current Toyota and Lexus models and quite frankly it sucks donkey rods. My wife's 2013 RX450h NAV and Bluetooth is 1000 times worse than Ema's (My 2006 Prius) and no one seems willing to fix it.

There are two MAJOR problem areas. Both have been submitted to the NHTSA because they are actual safety hazards not just inconveniences. 1. There are NONE, ZERO, ZIP, NADA voice commands to Cancel, Stop, Suspend, or Resume guidance in the NAV. You have to cursor through the screens to suspend guidance which causes distracted driving. 2. The Bluetooth phone pairing DOES NOT override the NAV. You can be driving down the road talking to a customer helping them get their loading system back on line so their plant can go back into production and BAM, "In 1/2 mile turn left on Williamson road." Customer asks what was that and you must respond it's my stupid Toyota/Lexus NAV. Or as happened to my wife you can be on a phone call with the CEO and it happens. Yeah that doesn't go over to well. The Lexus doesn't get its NAV used much.

So my question is. Have these jokes of systems been fixed for 2016?

    Happy driving,
    Chris

My biggest Disappointment is that they do not support apple car play or android auto. Even the 2016 Mitsubishi Mirage does...

If you have been in a 2016 Camry or Tacoma it'll be just like that... its MUCH better!

    tmacrp,

MUCH better at causing distracted driving you mean?

I spoke with the Diagnostic Specialist for Hendrick Lexus in Charlotte, NC yesterday and he stated that "They do not have a solution for this issue." LOL.

So Toyota/Lexus acknowledges that their Entune/NAV/Bluetooth system causes distracted driving and has for a very long time but has no plans to correct it and no one who has driven the 2016 has tested it to see if it's corrected. I registered a safety complaint at safecar.gov

Doesn't look like I will putting 1 mile on a 2016 Prius let alone 500,000 like I'm planning for Ema.

    Happy driving,
    Chris

Hmmm, rather strong opinion there. I have no problem with the NAV system in Pearl S, because it's so bad I don't use it. ;)

Agreed. I bought the Advanced version of the PiP for the slightly-better sound of the JBL system. I've used the built-in Nav just once to judge its performance, then I returned to the Waze app to get MUCH better real-time traffic info. I wonder if it's arrogance preventing certain carmakers from admitting their own systems are far below par. I realize Apple Car Play and Android Auto are in there infancy, but why not provide the option? The system in my Lexus IS wasn't any better either (though the Mark Levinson system was MUCH better than any stock system I have ever heard).

i dont get it, who is it distracting to, your wifes CEO on the bluetooth? You want to hide the fact that you are in the car? You are actually being distracted by talking on the phone, not the nav trying to guide you somewhere.

The Navigation in my 2015 Legacy was way worse than in my 2010 Prius... The screen was higher resolution, but the interface was terrible. It would take 6 or 7 tries to get the Voice recognition to work, even sitting still with no other noises around. After manually entering an address, you had to press OK, to confirm, and then press GO.

    spwolf,

Its distracting to the driver no matter who it is. As a test next time you are driving a car in a major city at rush hour trying to explain how to rewire an FLX128 I/O card to bypass an apparent bad output with a customer have your passenger begin speaking to you in a loud voice on a totally unrelated subject. My guess is it will be a distraction, LOL.

    Happy driving,
    Chris

    2016 Prius Gen 4 Touring GPS-NAV questions:

    1. On my previous 2006 Prius, I could adjust/modify the GPS mapping screen so that some of the items do not display; I'm not taking about the POI's. But rather, you could have a cleaner, more visible map (on my former 2006 model), so that, as examples, the compass, Current Street name, Current Location, +/-, did NOT appear on the screen; you could remove some of them, or all of them. Any idea if this feature or setting is available on the 2016 Prius? I can't seem to find one.

    2. I assume the NAV/GPS map is updated through the port that opens up from the lower right of the screen? Guessing Toyota will be charging for the map updates? Will any updates be free during the warranty period?

As I posted in another thread I bought a 2016 Trim IV with PCP and ATP a few weeks ago for my company and drove it for about 500-600 miles before giving it to an employee. I was able to test both deficiencies listed above and can report that 1 of the 2 have been corrected.

    1. Voice commands - At least "Stop Guidance" and "Resume Guidance" have returned to the NAV in the 2016. Now if Lexus would only fix my wifes' 450h, LOL.

    2. Sadly the Bluetooth still does not override the NAV so it will talk over you when you are on a phone call for all the world to hear and cause distracted driving. A women's voice is yelling at you to turn left in 1/2 mile out of the blue as you attempt to carry on a conversation with someone be it family or work. And heaven forbid you get slightly off track and the NAV goes into the "In a 1/4 mile make a legal U-turn" loop every 30 seconds. At that point it is best to tell Mr. Customer "Sorry I can't help you get your plant running again. Give me 5 minutes to turn off my NAV and I will call you back." LOL. How anyone sees the NAV overriding the Bluetooth as "safe" is beyond me.

I guess 1 out 2 isn't bad. In baseball its .500 but at the free throw line its 50% ... I guess it matter which world you live in :confused:o_O

    Happy driving,
    Chris

    Update,

Posted in another thread but thought I would update this one as well.

Well it finally happened. The deliberately built in distracted driving software that Toyota has installed in their new Toyota/Lexus vehicles finally caused an issue. See the attached photo.

Not sure why Toyota decided to actually put in software that CAUSES accidents when the Bluetooth/NAV in my 2006 works PERFECTLY. Nothing repeat absolutely nothing should ever override and talk over phone calls. EVER. PERIOD. End of story.

    Thanks Toyota!!!!

    Chris

I have no problem with the NAV because I bought a 2017 Prius Two that has most of the safety features without the broken NAV

From my reading, they gave the car to an employee to drive & the employee likely had an accident.

Yes, the car is owned by my company and used by an employee and he was in accident. Distracted driving 101, not sure why Toyota feels the need to program software to cause it but they do. Good thing was everyone was ok. Car is still in the shop under repairs.

Yes, but what was the distraction? Nav instruction, telephone call, or what?

Once the phone call comes in you have to manually turn off the navigation guidance in order to use the phone. The process of completing this task at 65 on an interstate in Atlanta or through the twisty hills of western NC while looking for deer at night can ... ummmm ... be challenging to say the least. I have had a couple close calls in my wife's 2013 Lexus RX450h because it has the same problem as Prii.

As I said, all and all it is a VERY dangerous software glitch that only showed up in the latest revisions. My 2006 works PERFECTLY!!!!

I spoke with a Case Manager at Toyota Corporate yesterday and he basically told me to "go pound sand". Seems like Toyota doesn't care about safety to much anymore just sales. Looks like we purchased our last Toyota/Lexus when Ema dies.

Ohhh as an update the 2016 Prius in the photo above .... TOTALED!!!!

    Happy driving,
    Chris

I am sure @Prius Team would be very interested in this, especially since they could lose a corporate customer too.
