    I read somewhere that the Mazda RX-7 actually had great emissions for it's day in part to it's terrible emissions at the engine. They were designed to burn oil on purpose and have long combustion chambers that don't let the flame get to the ends. The resulting exhaust from those engine has a lot of hydrocarbons and oxygen that the OEM catalytic converters were able to easily clean up.

    Diesels have had 2-way cats to handle CO and HC for awhile.
