The Advance is 22 pounds heavier with the OEM tires. This will likely have little effect in hybrid mode, but might in EV with the lower power output. If the current tires are heavier than the factory installed ones, that extra weight will have a bigger impact as unsprung weight.

So it might well be a fat cat.

edit: Looked up the tire weights. The Michelin Defender is the same weight(19lbs) as the likely OEM tire, and the Goodyear Eagle LS-2 is pounds lighter than that. So the Advance has tires that have a higher rolling resistance, which is exacerbated by being new, than the other car's, and they are also heavier.

The Tirerack site doesn't say, but check the tires to see if they are unidirectional(there will be an arrow), and if they are mounted in the right direction. Rolling resistance will be worse if they are not.

Do you really think what you've described would make a 20% difference? I didn't see an arrow but the tires do have on them which side is the outside which would have the same affect as having an arrow. All 4 are mounted properly.

Checked for cats, mice and bole weevils but found none!

As mentioned previously, the motor alone has less power than the total hybrid system. Perhaps the tires are providing enough additional resistance to push the motor into a less efficient power range.
The additional weight from the tires and trim will have bigger impact the more stops there are on the route.

Does the advance have the Technology package? Toyota Prius Plug-in Interior, Exterior & Safety Features
I don't see the foglights drawing enough power to have much impact even if left on all the time, same with the better head unit, but the sensors for the Pre-Collision system might. Any extra current draw will add on to the tire and weight difference.

Don't mean to be a bother if this was asked before, but has the alignment been checked recently? It is possible for it to be off and not be detectable by driving.

Swapping the wheels between the two cars would be a good test. Check the tires while they are off with a tread depth gauge. That will help find unusual wear that might go unnoticed.

I believe that the 2012 advanced came with practically everything. It has all of the items that are offered as options on the 2015 advanced. Car was aligned a month ago and tires were balanced last week. Tire depth was 9/32.

Greg, you said you have decided already which one to keep.
If the 2012 still have the original 12V battery I would swap batteries and keep the newer on the 2012 even if it is not improving the EV miles.

If you mean removing the negative cable on the 12v battery to reset everything I've done that.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but: your two plug-ins are different model years. Is it possible Toyota's changed the software, between the years, allowing a bit higher EV percentage?

anythings possible, but we haven't heard much mention of drastic changes. everyone seems to be in about the same boat, except those with severe short range problems.

    Now this is interesting!

tire set A is a mismatched set with about half the tread left
tire set B are almost new Michelin Defender Green X

First EV test trying to get maximum EV miles. Both cars fully charged at the same time and then driven the next morning. Windows up and no A/C.
2013 Base with set A tires got 14.9 miles
2012 Advanced with set B got 12.5 miles

Second test today. A little more wind. Both cars charged right before taking them out. Windows halfway down and no A/C.
2013 Base with set B tires got 14.5 miles but I got stopped at 2 additional lights
2012 Advanced with set A tires got 14.9 miles

I've never gotten more than 11 EV miles out of the 2012 except for these two tests. I can consistently get around 13 EV miles out of the 2013. This was before the tire switch today.

I'm charging the 2012 right now. Later today I'm going to drive it to Home Depot and back on tire set A. I drove there this morning on tire set B and came up about 2 miles short of making it back home in all electric. Let's see if it can make it round trip on the A tires.

Something is still off. Switching tires made no difference in the 2013 but make a significant difference in the 2012.

BTW, after switching the tires the low pressure light came on. Is there a way to sync the sensors myself?

at the same time you switched tyres, you charged before driving, instead of the night before.

Correct, both were charged at the same time under both tests. The first test was the night before and today's test was right before.

I don't think so because there have been several times I disconnected the charger right before driving it with no increase in EV miles. I will check it to be 100% sure.
