Hi. I recently bought a set of Gen III tires (195/65r15) off of Craigslist to use on my Gen II. I did it to save a few bucks, but it got me thinking... do I need a Gen III spare? Are they the same or different, and if different, will it even fit in the spare compartment? My research seems to indicate yes I need a new spare, but it won't fit, but inconclusive. Any help?

You are fine with gen 2 spare. It’s a bit smaller than 195/65r15 but for shorter trips its ok. If you have to use it on longer trip, which should not be done anyway, just put it on back. So if you need to drive longer and your puncture is in front tire you need to jack it twice.

That's what I was thinking, but just wanted to make sure. Does anyone know if the Gen III spare will fit into the Gen II compartment? I might as well switch them out, since I don't really see the 185's on CL too often.

the spare is a "donut". no need to worry about the spare. just make sure its good and got 60psi in it and check it when you do maintenance.

Isn't the temp spare outside diameter a little less, even than the stock tire of the car it came with? The few times I've had it out it seemed to be, but I didn't measure.

probly is but that don't matter. the donut spare is only to use to get you to the nearest tire shop to get your tire fixed or replaced. unsafe to drive on the donut fast or far.
