Priuschat is, for the most part, a forum where people are relatively open with each other. We like it that way.

However, there are some users who generate multiple accounts. Perhaps they do this so they can post different personalities / attitudes under each account. Please don't do this. It's deceptive and is often-times used in a manipulative manner.

When I see multiple users from the same IP, I will call you out and - most likely - freeze or delete all but one of the accounts. No, you do not get to choose which ones.

If you are not familiar with what I'm referring to, please look at the attached images.

I was a moderator and administrator on a different forum for several years. Each IP address is tied to a single location, but it can be worth checking to make sure 2 or more accounts aren't from family members, friends, co-workers, etc. before merging or banning.

Not an expert, but maybe dynamic IP address??? Or even with static IP, if different computers connect at same public WiFi, wouldn't they end up with the same IP?

Maybe it's just an apartment building where someone offers "Free internet for all Prius owners, through my ex's router". Just kidding, I think.

But it sure does look like a possible PriusChat troll farm for influencing public opinion. Nyet?

I ran a big (hobby related) email list many years ago, and only occasionally ran across people with multiple accounts. Sometimes a new account set up by someone who had been kicked off. Occasionally someone who had changed email addresses and took the opportunity to show up with a clean slate and create a new image, along the lines of self improvement rather than being deceptive or a bad actor. Occasionally someone who wanted to compliment their own posts, hahaha.

Being an admin who examined a lot of posts by someone before kicking them off or giving them a "time out" in childcare terms, I was never fooled by bad actors when they reappeared. Writing style, courtesy or lack thereof, language skills, what issues they cared about, who they picked fights with, and so forth always gave them away very quickly.

There is a big PANIC among Internet users over "privacy" and maybe with good reason.......causing millions of people to set up Virtual Private Networks.
Could that be part of the cause of multiple users showing the same IP address ??
Anyhow, I think the days of really knowing a users IP are about to come to an end......if they haven't already.

I'd buy Sam Spade's idea more than I'd accept a half dozen members randomly being at the same Starbucks at the same time, all the time.

Time will tell what's going on. As long as the grouped users aren't exhibiting suspicious behavior, I would check it out to see what's the technical cause (especially if it's becoming a trend, like VPN usage or connecting through some specific app or whatever) but not worry much about it being nefarious if the users aren't trying to exert influence in unusual or concerted ways..

Seems to me dynamic IPs are still the norm with a lot of ISPs. There just aren't enough 32-bit IP addresses to go around. The IP address I've got right now on my desktop computer probably comes from a Frontier address pool for this entire city.

Mine probably changes relatively rarely because my desktop computer doesn't often disconnect, but a lot of people's do. I certainly am not paying Frontier a premium for a static IP address.

IPv6 is technically able to solve the not-enough-to-go-around problem. How much PriusChat traffic comes in from IPv6 addresses?

don't call me surely - ha the very notion just made me laugh. If kk6pd & I are the same, someone needs to tell one of us who is the real one hahaha. Kk6pd is an amateur radio ID, & my amateur radio ID is W6egg. I've posted several photos of our Lexus with our license plate with that ID. So if you go to qrz.com website and look up our 2 license IDs, you'll see we are likely not even near each other's cities.

chances are, the technology is out there to spoof such things as ip's. if I knew how to do that, I would become bisco.
    ;)
I wonder if it could be because others use Puffin data compression browser that goes through a central location. just a thought. I hope it's something more nefarious than that.

    EDIT;
just looked up @KK6PD on qrz.com - and yep .... Pat's mail gets delivered up in Glendale - about 1½hrs north of us down here in south OC.
I think i even PM'ed him @ least once re radio stuff. can't remember. Baah ... old age .... it ain't for sissies
    The mystery continues

Could it be users running Private Internet Access or similar location masking??

I CANNOT see Hill and Just.Drive.It being the same person.

I know I've seen his screen name, but there's no way he could be nearly as cool as I am - even if he and I ARE the same person.

bah, that's nothing. Tony has met me too, back in Detroit when Toyota invited a couple dozen of us. maybe he doesn't want to admit sharing a hotel with me. Good thing I kept the photos.
