Heaven forbid if we should “modernize the Iraqi thought process†who wouldn’t want to support their cultural beliefs held for the last 1000+ years. Here are some of the ones I’m sure you are in complete agreement with . . . First, women should be seen and not heard. On sedond thought they shouldn't be seen either. In fact don't even let them out of the house unescorted. Second, women shouldn't or don't need to be educated, drive, or have an equal voice in anything. Third, a wife should be beaten when the husband feels that she has disobeyed him. Fourth, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) politely referred to as “female circumcision†so that women won’t be tempted beyond what their feeble wills can stand. Fifth, Polygamy is OK. Sixth, a wife is property. Need I go on? But of course your right, no need to “modernize the Iraqi thought processes†what a totally quaint and humorous POV. I "chuckle" at the thought of the imposition of Wester Culture doing away with such things.

p.s. Oh I forgot, Seventh: the right of the husband to murder his wife if he feels or suspects that she is cheating on him.

    John Adams:
Be not intimidated... nor suffer yourselves to be wheedled out of your liberties by any pretense of politeness, delicacy, or decency. These, as they are often used, are but three different names for hypocrisy, chicanery and cowardice.

I'm not going to argue the facts; I'm *so* glad to be able to live in this Coutry.

What I'm saying is that it's incredibly arrogant of one group of people (the term 'hubris' jumps immediately to mind) to think that they actuallyhave the foresight to implement such a thing.

I'm not saying that it doesn't need to be done.

What I'm saying is, it's not for us -- or any nation -- to do. We, as people...not omnipotent beings, but people, just like them...simply don't have the perspective to dabble in any forms of social engineering.

Further, I'm simply not convinced that we really have anyone's (but our own) best interests as a top priority.

And the way we've run roughshod over the world in the last four decades seems to bear that out.

C'mon...you can't honestly tell me that we wouldn't be over there if there wasn't a bunch of oil to be had. It's so obvious that any talk of "the common good" seems really hollow. Iraqi women have been treated poorly for a long, long time now...but suddenly you're all worried about it?

Why do you think that happened?

"Further, I'm simply not convinced that we really have anyone's (but our own) best interests as a top priority."

You make the very common mistake of thinking that all Americans have the same interest. War is in the interests of the oligarchy - the very small elite class that Bush was born into and represents. They despise the workers they exploit and make fun of those children they send to wars which generate huge profits for those in the oligarchy. Kerry, are you listening?

Bush and Kerry are both members of the Skull and Bones club of Yale - a death cult club open only to the elite. They have nothing in common with ordinary Americans, in spite of Bush's fairly bad imitation of a Texan redneck.

Ahhh, that's an important distinction...between the interests of the majority and the oligarchy. You're right; I do tend to blur it, although I should know better.

As I've said before, I think it's ironic that corporate America is abandoning any long term obligation to the worker...and yet we, as individuals, are encouraged to "stay the course" of generating (as you said) huge profits for the elite.

There really is a tremendous sense of irony, it seems.

It's difficult to admit to oneself that one is the bug, and not the windshield.

Hang on a sec. . . I got to look at this again. Hmmmmmm, First you say that you are glad that you live in this country. Could one say that is because of the society, it's makeup/character and it's rule of law? Second, you state that "I'm not saying that it doesn't need to be done" in essence then I would conclude that you mean "it needs to be done" but third you don't think we should do it or anyone else for that matter? So who's left to help these poor women out of a barbaric situation? We have a long line of leaders and Presidents that advocate the spread of freedom and liberty for all and to all people in the world. Until you get to the last few years where it seems now that some say we should stand around and say “Who me?†“No not me, oh yeah I believe in all those things but who am I to actually act or confer upon others this freedom, liberty or relief from want and fear? Ack! Please reconsider! :(

    p.s. please reread my sig.

p.p.s. Yes I think that we would! As evidenced by the first Gulf War. Many accused of the same motives there and yet when we left did we take the oil did we have any better access to it than we did before? How about in Somilia, the Balkans, Panama, Granada, and all the other countries we have given aid to and then quietly walked out to leave them to their own devices as far as society, political structure etc. . .
