I haven't used or needed to use a parking brake since my shifting days of yore. Never had a problem.

I use the parking brake all the time. Old habit I guess.

Never use them unless the parking angle is more than 3% then I MIGHT use it

On the few occasions I have not set the parking brake, the car moved a bit and then jolted to a stop. I didn't like that feeling. Is it resting on the transmission?

Well, Prius doesn't really have a transmission, but park effectively puts a "pawl" in the drive line, thus preventing it from rotating.

For those of us who still regularly drive manual transmissions (no slushboxes in my household, dad's only slushbox is a diesel tractor/loader), a blanket policy to always engage that brake is still a good idea.

But then, households still driving mostly MTs are scarce these days.

Thank you. that's the word I was trying to think of. Pawl. So apparently it's ok for the weight of the car to rest against the pawl? (Probably not while parked on a downslope)

In my manual transmission car, I used the parking brake on maybe 1 in 100 times I parked. Only on grades exceeding something like 5%.

There is no parking in neutral but i guess if you apply the parking brake then put in park it will not put as much pressure on the pawl.

Thanks. That's what I do, as per the owner's manual. Depress foot parking brake. Then press the P button. Then power off. What can I say, I'm a "by the book" person.

Yes, I know the software won't allow the parking pawl to engage when the car is moving. I know that it is likely not necessary. But it "feels better" to be at a complete stop using the parking brake, and then press the"Park" button. To each their own.

Used it all the time on my manual 5-speed 1985 Celica GT (miss that car!).

Other than that, only use it when on a discernible up or down slope.

I also just power off my Prius Prime when I am going to park it. Sets it to park and powers off everything in one button push. What can I say - I'm lazy :)

Nice, my only other brand new car, besides my Prime, was a '75 Celica GT. Sweet ride! Shifting on that was like an automatic. (miss that car too)! ;)

Always use it, less stress on the transmission parking fork.

So...we're supposed to use chocks when changing a flat?

Switch it around: instead of thinking what you're supposed to do, think it through for yourself. Securely chocking fore-and-aft, the wheel diagonally across from the corner you're raising: the car (and the jack) is going to be a lot more stable. Solidly applied parking brake is a good contender too.

I have a set of 4 (heavy) solid rubber chocks in the garage, but I keep another lightweight pair in the car.

do you use your blinkers? daytime running lights? AC? headlights in rain? Some people are afraid they will lose .000008 mpg. Some nuts don't even use seat belts.

In California, you can get a ticket for not turning on your headlights when your windshield wipers are on.
