Is it me or does anyone else gets upset when the gas attendant wants to pump more gas because he feels the cost is too low?

    Tammy, welcome to the site.

No. I've been known to do it myself on occasion. It seems to happen more often when paying cash just to round to the next dollar. Different story if you can see gas in the fill neck or it is running down the fender. The best time to do it is before the trip knowing the cheapest gas is the gas back home.

Sadly, that's how it is in Coquitlam, all full service, all the time. Think I've filled up in my hometown once in the 25 years we've been here. If you're trying to track mpg by tanks, full service is a BIG negative. Thankfully we have lots of neighbouring community stations that are self serve.

Yeah, tell them to fill to the first shut off. If they refuse, try the competition.

Dang, now you've got me thinking about something... Nope: good thoughts, good thoughts.

Now I'm not sure, I think some places have uniforms, some not. Our nearby full service station (who's doorstep I never darken) is the ONE place we saw a NEAR disaster. Walking along the other side of the street, glanced over: the attendant had locked a pump on, and the shut off had failed. It was just gushing gas. Went on for at least 30 seconds before he came out of his lttle building, and did the most comical stop/gape/dash I've ever seen.

Of course only NJ and OR have gaso attendants in USA.

I always forget...my question is - is the attendant annoyed when I start filling myself in NJ?

Valet parking everywhere? Every elevator has an attendant? Guy in the washrooms hands you a towel?

What with EVERYTHING being made in China, maybe this is what it's coming to?

    Uhoh, going off topic.

I only remember 1 instance. At some stations the pump is locked requiring the attendant to enter a PIN. When I'm buying gas the station isn't busy and by the time I record the numbers the guy has arrived. Usually it is busy enough so I can top off as desired, return the nozzle, get my receipt and leave. It's amazing how one car at the pumps attracts others.

Most guys wear generic work clothes from the rental company. Some shirts have a name or logo patch. No hats or caps but some do wear turbans.

It has been years since there were washroom attendants at the casinos. The service staff and the service has been really cut back.

In Oregon, it is illegal to pump extra gasoline into the tank after the auto-stop.

Since, self-serve is illegal in Oregon as in New Jersey, I have never seen an attendant add extra gasoline to round-off the price since the law went into place. I sure it happens in some places, but for the most part, the ban seems to prevent this practice in my experience.

And for those who think the self-serve ban is "stupid," it prevents me getting fouled hands and clothing, it prevents me having to brave the Oregon elements of rain and sleet and it gives a fair number of people a chance at a first job (or a second or third).

Just an aside, had some time to kill and looked up the Oregon reasoning behind "no topping off," and other than the spillage issue with fumes and health and fire hazards, a couple of the state news releases about "no topping off" said something to the effect:

topping off the tank does not equal more gas in the tank:

modern pumps don't allow extra fuel to feed into the tank anyway, which can lead to customers getting charged for fuel they don't get.

In some cases, overfilling a gas tank can cause a vehicle’s vapor control system to clog and stop working, which can require costly repairs.

Did not know about either of these points, nor do I know how true they might be.

BTW: Some stations in Oregon have attendants in the Chevron/Shell/Texaco uniform, others do not. Some stations clean windows, check oil, etc. some do not.

I used to live in NJ! Hopewell that is. When I went to Seton Hall University, there would be out-of-state classmates that would try to fill up by themselves and get yelled at and they would have no clue why. One time, they tried to tip them, haha. But I will be honest... growing up in NJ, then moving out to IL, I had NO CLUE how to fill up. Had to ask someone how when I was 23 years old.

Been topping to the filler neck since I started driving when I fill up...including the pumps with the boot. Never have I sucked gas back into the pump/ground tank, screwed up the vent or any smog system doing so. You folks are too gullible.

Just had it filled up on the NJ Turnpike yesterday (8.1 gallons @ $1.979/gallon.) The attendants didn't look as professional as in the "old days."

I am actually happy with the attendants when in Jersey...they seem to come to the car promptly and usually do not top off. But my fav stations are all changing to minor brand names.

Probably more worried about being fined than annoyed

The vapor control system could become damaged when over filled, but I don't think it is something the owner will notice, or many states would test for during an inspection.

The part of the nozzle that sucks up the vapors to return them to the station tank can also collect the gasoline itself. The fuel is coming out faster than it can collect though. So when you reach the level where gasoline can start going back to the station tank, it is also pouring down the side of your car.

As to the OP, I would say annoyed is too strong a term. Maybe miffed, but I only care because I'm tracking fuel economy, and that little top off will throw off the accuracy of that tank. Buying fuel with cash hasn't been the norm for awhile, so I'd be more surprized by the attendant adding some gas to round the cost amount to the nearest dollar or quarter.
