Does anyone have any experience using fuel additives? I use the Redline SI-1 in my Mazda Protege and previously owned Mazda 626. Redline SI-1 helps keep fuel injectors clean and also helps to lubricate the upper cylinders as well. I notice a big difference in engine 'smoothness' on the mazdas, but was just wondering if people use anything like that in the Prius. With my Prius being new, and the fact that I only use Chevron, my injectors are clean, but I'm thinking longer term maintenance.

I use one bottle of Gumout Regane, in the tank right before an oil change.

Stick with Chevron, or other top tier gas. Sometimes I put Berryman Chemtool B 12 in my Prius, about every 8,000 miles or so.

I wouldn't use any additives in the Prius. The Prius is too sensitive for any additives and wouldn't make much of a difference. I was told it can also cause CEL if given too much.

Let me know if anyone tested and proved that its okay for it to be used.

Chevron and Texaco (both BP companies) have Techron additive in the gas. That's all you need for injector and FS cleaning, no additional additives required.

They are a waste of money. If you have an extra $10 that you are really wanting to spend go for it, but in this day and age, they don't help anything enough to justify the expense.

LOL! Nonsense. Chevron+Texaco are top tier, BP is not.

I generally stick with top-tier gas, usually Shell, in my vehicles. I do use Marvel Mystery Oil - mixed with the gas in the Onan engine of my 1985 John Deere 318 garden tractor.

These are the top tier retailers for fuel. I am actually surprised that BP isn't on the list. I am not attached to top tier gasoline by any means. There is a BP close to us that I like to use, and I have not noticed any differences between using "top tier" or not with any of my cars.

Quick trip for me and still use additives after a fuel injector went out in my Prowler and it cost several hundred $$ to have repaired

Has anyone tried different brands of gasoline and their effect on mileage? I seem to get better mileage with Citgo or Mobil than Shell or Chevron. Hess is the absolute worst I tested (in my '07). Besides, I'd rather my money go to a psycho in South America then a psycho in the middle east...

    I use J.C. Whitney Gas Tank Snakes ® .
They eat all the impurities found in there and excrete nothing!
They have been proven to be as effective as all those other hokie gas additives and they live forever !!
I seem to get the best mileage using them.

I asked a similar question about using Costco gas. What I got out of it was that there is some regulation that all gas must have some minimum type of additives. But that "maybe" putting some of that Chevron additive into the gas tank every 5K-10K miles or so might not be a bad idea. But that "maybe" that's all for my mental well being rather than actual benefit. My end result is that I'll put that Cheveron additive in every once in awhile and sleep a little better. Otherwise, I'll be filling up at the local Cheveron or Shell gas station, rather than Costco.

The chevron additive, at least the high dollar one, used to say "Do not use more than once per oil change."

    Why is that?
Could it be too much of these detergent properties can be a bad thing?
Like it can build up in the oil and start deteriorating the oil seals and such?

Look, all gas tastes the same. Try it! It is federally mandated to taste the same.
Have you ever heard of dirty clogged injectors in the last decade?
Sure an injector will go bad here and there mechanically but that is not fuel related.

Why not put your worrying into something useful, like ,,, Asteroids.

Or keep using Mystery additives if it gives you a Placebo Effect... Only you know what's important to you!

I was told recently by a small (garden tractor type) engine expert that Costco and other low price sellers buy gasoline at a discount that has been in the supply chain beyond the point at which the major brands consider it to be too old to sell under their brand name. I had not heard this and have not been able to verify it, but if true it would be a good reason not to buy gas from Costco and other such places. Ethanol causes gasoline to go bad a lot sooner that it used to and when it does can cause fuel system problems in car and small engines.
