    Hello,

Wife bought a 2016 Prius 4 late October and now has almost 5.5k miles. The maintenance warning is displayed on the dashboard. Does Toyota offer free oil change for this car (assuming the warning is for oil change)? I recall the sales guy told us it is at 10k interval :).

    Thanks,
    Tt

The oil changes are every 10,000 miles. Tire rotation and overall inspection every 5,000 miles. First two oil changes are FREEEEEEEE!

Which country are you in (not sure where Covina is?). In Australia, you pay for services, and the service is every 6 MONTHLY/10,000 kilometer.

So the maintenance light is for the items above. Is that free of charge? I normally do my own maintenance on my car but not hers :(.

My dealer told me free maintenance for two (2) years or 25000 miles, whichever comes first. Check the maintenance schedule you got with the car for details on what they will do...

If you are in the US, you should have received a ToyotaCare packet in the mail containing an Owner Profile card.

    Well that's not exactly true.

You get 2 oil changes during that interval......because they go by the "recommendation".
I don't remember if you get 4 tire rotations or not.

You can use your 2 free oil changes whenever YOU elect to do it......if it is less than the recommended interval.
But I had to insist that mine get changed early around 7K miles and then the second time around 14K. Tires were rotated then too.

The seemed a bit confused by this but got the job done.

P.S. The maintenance light usually comes on because of the 5K tire interval.

I can only imagine how much money has been made by the manufactures since they started putting in mileage based maintenance lights. There was a time they wouldn't disclose how to reset them. If the Prius light is at 5K, does that line up with any thing they call for at that interval?

Honda has an interesting system. They no longer publish a maintenance schedule. Well, that's not quite true: I think if you search hard you find a grudgingly disclosed schedule. But anyway:

On the dash there's a percent countdown to next service interval, and once it get's down to 15% it displays a constant warning, and indicates via a code what the service entails. For example:

    A1

A is an oil change, without filter change*, and 1 is tire rotation.

    B12

B is an oil and filter change, 1 the tire rotation, and 2 is cabin/engine air filter replacement.

    A couple of nice things:

    1. The specific instruction discourages dealerships "fluffing" the schedule, pushing extras. They still do it, but it's a lot easier to argue with them, lol.

    2. The schedule is not a dumb, kilometer (or mile) counter. I'm not sure what all it's monitoring, but it's various factors. A car driven for a lot of short trips will have the warning come a lot sooner, for example.

There are a few maintenances independent of this system. For example, every three years Honda says change the brake fluid, regardless of mileage.

    * Trying to get dealerships to actually not change the filter is tough in practice. They treat you like you're nuts, at least around here. I appreciate you are leaving about a cup of old oil behind, doing this. So, my DIY tactic is to remove/drain/reinstall the filter, at service A. Actually did this yesterday, bloody cold in our garage: had the doors closed, the engine heat and two heaters going, but still barely above freezing, brrr.

To be fair, yes the maintenance schedules for specific items and logs have gotten much better. I don't use them, as a single sheet of paper in the glove box is all I need.

Mine came with 5 tire rotations, out to 25k. I didn't collect them all. When taking oil change services early, the dealership voided any skipped tire-only services.

Yeah, I'm not really impressed by the US schedule presentation: event by event. I went through the US booklet, entered the items into a spreadsheet. Discovered a few anomalies: a service that went along at a regular interval, but was missed at one. It's a poor format, almost impossible to check without translation to a visual chart. Which begs the question: why don't they just do that to begin with.

Here's a snapshot of my spreadsheet, it might be a little out-of-date now.

I'm not in complete agreement with it, just wanted to see at a glance what they were saying. The driver's floor mat check for example: that's a LOT of checking, lol.

Well, I'm glad you did. Nicely done. Very nicely. I'm going to print it and see if my 2017 Prius Four schedule is any different and report back (eventually; at the moment, I'm not sure where mine is)

Any way I/we could get a copy of your spreadsheet? Even a CSV version?

    Thanks again either way.

Thank you! BTW/FYI, Think Free Viewer was able to open in, while Google Sheets wasn't. Not complaining, just reporting.
