Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 45% of all deaths (>4 million) in Europe in 20161,2. Dogs may be beneficial in reducing cardiovascular risk by providing a non-human form of social support and increasing physical activity. Dog ownership has been reported to be associated with alleviation of social isolation and improved perception of wellbeing, particularly in single persons and the elderly3,4,5. A meta-analysis of eleven observational studies found that dog owners walked more and were more physically active than non-owners6. Two studies assessing changes in physical activity after acquisition of a dog or other pet found increased self-reported recreational walking7,8. A recent study showed that dog ownership also supports the maintenance of physical activity during poor weather9.
Given women treat men as dogs, we understand why women live longer.

Many women get treated like dogs by men. However, if more people had the good characteristics of dogs, the world might be a better place for all.

many older persons fall while walking their dog, and fracture a hip or pelvis.

There are monthly chewables your vet can prescribe that prevent against fleas and ticks. The prescription medication you rub on their coats is much less expensive, though.

Check for low cost pet vaccination clinics in your area, they'll save you lots of money and keep your pet safe.

Are ticks a problem in your area? We've had dogs for years, and they only bought ticks in from our yard last year.
I get our flea and tick meds from Amazon.

Yeah, it's a problem. I somehow noticed they got ticks, only when they play around bushes.

Maybe prevention would be to keep them indoors

Our dogs think 'tick grooming' is great fun!

Last year, I met a lady and her lap dog at the park and he had two, engorged ticks on his snout. When I let him go, the biggest one was gone and I pointed out the other to her. Hopefully she took my advice and took her dog to a groomer.

sure is! Move! Unless we go hunting, or skulking around in some distant land, there isn't a tick for miles & miles. Now - chiggers?

That's a different story. Wish my Nashville son-in-law would mow his yard more frequently, then even that - it wouldn't be an issue when we head to Tennessee . Those little bugs will make you look like you've got the worst case of smallpox in history.

I just consulted with my expert., Bob, & you'll be relieved to know ~

And I can further dovetail this back into the environmental forum. As the California drought continues to be an issue, we got rid of our flea potential by removing the lawn and installing fake grass that we bought from Costco. Looks great, needs no water (drought area) , and Fred's horribly acidic pee no linger causes horrible lawn burning that makes the yard otherwise look like crop circles - a win-win-win.

By better ½ suffers horribly from bouts with depression, & Fred helps pull her through it.

Your skin getting messed up wouldn't be so bad if it were only a flea or a tick, it's a cheeeeegger - as they say in the south.

Although ticks can give you Lyme disease, and that's something that can actually make you ill.

Regularly found them after mowing the mother-in-law's yard on me. Her place was up against a cemetery and a stand of woods though.

Our place is right in town. The ticks are likely riding in on the rabbits that have been doing well for the past couple of years.
