Driving a Prius Prime

might be the tires, what pressures are you running?

 

i would think that would help? how about tire brand?

 

i have no experience with them, were the 2016's the same?

No, don't have this problem. Are you in winter or spring tires. Is it hot and you have winter tires, If so then it will feel floaty. If its cold and you have all seasons or springs it will feel floaty.

 

Turn off the lane departure warning, it floats you around, as you mentioned check the air pressure.
Stop driving above the speed limit...

 

I had my first experience driving in heavy winds today going home from work on the freeway. My speed was around 60 mph. This Prime seems to need more driver input than my 2012 Prius v. Usually I try to keep the steering wheel in one position when being buffeted by the wind, but with the Prime I had to keep correcting just to keep the car in my lane. Anyone else noticed this?

 

The grooves in Concrete makes mine float at high speed.

 

My 2016 regular Prius does it too. I have the same tires and going straight I have to put a slight input with the steering wheel, kind of back and forth to keep it centered in the lane. On crooked roads there is no issue.
I think it is the caster setting in the steering that causes it. My old 2008 did not do this.

 

I played with the steering today on the way home from work. I noticed that when I turn the steering wheel left and right quickly (only minor left right motion) at about 50 mph, the car really didn’t move much to the left or right. Feels like a really loose front end. Don’t know if it could be tire size or something else. My Prius v has 17” tires and the Prime only has 15” tires. Will have to drive the “v” again and see if there is a lot of difference between the two. Will keep you posted.

 

Mine had a suspension piece in the rear that was not tightened sufficiently. Wore through enough to actually crack. My car drives much nicer now that it was replaced and properly tightened. If you start hearing any squeaking noise at all bring it in and have them check the suspension (on mine particularly it was the left rear upper control arm).

BTW: I also suffer from high wind buffeting. Living in hilly farmland you can be completely shielded one second and then suddenly hit by 40MPH winds coming off a field. Usually I can tell when it's coming up by looking at semi's that suddenly swerve a foot to one side.

 

See earlier threads about this. Many of us have complained about the lack of centering/road feel. I have tried dropping the tire pressures back down and it made little difference. Everyone in my family that's driven the car has commented on it. Not an issue around town, but on a long highway trip I find the constant attention required to keep it centered in the lane tiring. I do not have lane assist turned on.

I have the Nano tires, and when they wear out I'll probably look for a different set that could help (some here have mentioned improved handling going to Michelins), and maybe I'll have my alignment guy see if he can tweak anything (though I understand not much is adjustable under there). In the meantime, I've more or less gotten used to it, so am letting it slide...
